from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jewish cemetery in Rehweiler is a former burial place of the Jews in the Geiselwinder district in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . The cemetery was established in the 19th century and was abandoned in 1938.

Geographical location

The old cemetery was located in the middle of the village, a site was cleared for the new cemetery in the east of Rehweiler. Today the Judenholz corridor, reminiscent of the cemetery, extends there. District road KT 15 runs north of it, while Geiselwind is in the northeast . In the south is the Geiselwinder district of Dürrnbuch . To the west lies Rehweiler, only separated by the Grundbach.

history

The history of the cemetery is closely linked to that of the Israelite religious community in Rehweiler. At the beginning of the 18th century, a Jewish community established itself in the Steigerwalddorf. The Jewish new settlers soon needed their own cemetery, which they set up in the middle of the village in 1725. After the village had belonged to the Electoral Palatinate of Bavaria in 1803 , the new masters ordered the cemetery to be relocated outside of the residential development in the Steigerwald.

The Jewish community protested against this and was able to prevent the relocation until 1812. The cemetery was then given a place in the east of the village. After the community dissolved at the beginning of the 20th century, the cemetery was also opened in 1938. A tombstone has been a reminder of the cemetery since 1987 . The inscription reads: “Here rests in peace Mendlein Grabfelder, / died on April 25, 1859, / buried on April 26, 1859. / In venerable memory of the Jewish cemetery Rehweiler, / which was in the field across from this path / and leveled became./ Future generations for reflection and a warning.
