from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jewish cemetery in Dettelbach is a former burial place of the Jews in the city in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . The cemetery was probably built in the 17th century and was abandoned in the 19th century.

Geographical location

The former cemetery is located in the northwest of the Dettelbacher district in the corridor "Judenfriedhof". It was built on a slope at a height of about 270 m above sea level . The cemetery is about 1.1 km from downtown Dettelbach. The Gembachgraben flows past some distance further north. To the south is the Nachtigallenstraße in the west of Dettelbach. The rectangular area measuring around 18 m × 43 m covers an area of around 8 hectares.

history

The Jewish community of Dettelbach is one of the oldest religious communities in the Würzburg monastery . People of the Jewish faith probably lived in the village as early as the 15th century. Presumably the number of Jews in Dettelbach continued to grow over the following centuries and permission was given to build a cemetery for the deceased . The complex was probably built around 1600 outside the walled city.

The cemetery on the outskirts served its purpose for over two hundred years. For reasons unknown so far, it was abandoned at the turn of the 19th century. There is no written evidence of the cemetery and there are no remains of tombstones to be seen on the site . The lower height of vegetation in comparison to neighboring parcels may indicate that stones have sunk into the ground.
