Jürgen Claus Hinrich Sydow (born April 30, 1921 in Dresden ; † January 13, 1995 in Tübingen ) was a German historian and archivist . From 1962 to 1983 he was director of the Tübingen City Archives. In 1971 he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Tübingen . Sydow presented numerous studies on city history and church history. By working on the history of Regensburg and Tübingen, Sydow was one of the best-known historians of southwest German urbanism.

Live and act

Jürgen Sydow was a devout Catholic. He attended the Episcopal St. Benno-Gymnasium in Dresden and passed the Abitur there in 1939. From 1939 to 1942 he studied historical auxiliary sciences as well as history, art history , Middle Latin philology and Egyptology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

By January 1942, Sydow trained as an archivist in Dresden and Weimar . In the summer of 1942, Jürgen Sydow received his doctorate in Munich under Rudolf von Heckel with a thesis on the "paleography of Cologne coin inscriptions in the Middle Ages" . In the further course of the Second World War, he was called up for military service. He experienced the end of the war in Italian captivity.

After the end of the war, Sydow entered the Benedictine Abbey of Ettal as a novice in 1946 . There he acquired knowledge of the history of liturgy, but left the monastery after a few months.

Sydow worked as a lecturer at the Brandenburg State Archives until 1951 , but had to relocate from the German Democratic Republic to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1951 due to political pressure . From 1953, Sydow worked as a city archivist and part-time teacher in Regensburg . In the course of the 1950s, Jürgen Sydow contributed many academic articles to the negotiations of the Historical Association for Upper Palatinate and Regensburg . During his time in Regensburg, Sydow dealt with both local issues and objects from church history .

Between 1953 and 1962 Sydow worked for the State Office for Archives Maintenance in Münster. During his time in Münster, Sydow was involved in the development of the Altena City Archives . In the 1960s he and Matthias Simon had a controversy about the denominational character of the imperial city of Regensburg. From 1962, Sydow headed the archive of the university town of Tübingen . As the Tübingen city archivist, he and Udo Rauch for the first time roughly recorded the archival material of the 19th century in a card index. In 1963 Jürgen Sydow took over the management of the Southwest German Working Group for Urban History Research founded by Otto Feger and Gerd Wunder in 1960 . According to Helmut Maurer, this initiative was decisively shaped by Sydow for twenty years.

In the winter semester of 1965/66, Sydow took on a teaching position for history at the University of Tübingen . In 1971 he was made an honorary professor.

In 1974, Sydow presented the first volume of a Tübingen city history, which covers the period from the Alemannic settlement in Ammertal to the transition from the Palatinate Tübingen city to the Württemberg people in 1342.

In the 1980s, Sydow published several essays in the Tübinger Blätter that deal with , among other things, the Swabian enthusiasm for Poland and everyday life in medieval monasteries. On May 27, 1983, Sydow retired as Tübingen's city archivist. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, he was honored with a collection of his essays. Jürgen Sydow's estate is in the Tübingen City Archives. It bears the signature E206 and comprises around 10.6 meters of shelf space.

Sydow's work on the Italian language area

Since 1956 Sydow was a corresponding member of the Accademia Spoletina , published frequently in Italian magazines and regularly took part in conferences in Prato as a speaker. Sydow's publications in Italian include, among other things, Di taluni tentativi di trattative commerciali tra la Sassonia e le Sicilie durante il regno di Carlo di Borbone ("About certain trade treaty efforts between Saxony and Sicily during the reign of Charles of Bourbon ") from 1949 and Spoleto vista da viaggiatori tedeschi dal XVII al XIX secolo (" Spoleto from the perspective of German travelers from the 17th to the 19th century") from 1954.

Church history work

Right from the start of his academic career, Jürgen Sydow was heavily involved in the historical institutions of church life. In addition to some popular scientific works such as the picture book Bebenhausen - 800 Years of History and Art, he published the extensive monograph Die Cisterzienserabtei Bebenhausen in the Germania Sacra in 1969 . Subsequently he worked as the main author on "The Cistercians". Sydow also contributed to the 800th anniversary of the Decretum Gratiani in 1952 with a description of the decree manuscripts in the Bavarian State Library in Munich.

Jürgen Sydow's primary research area was the connection between church history and the research field of medieval urbanism. With the help of interdisciplinary connections, Sydow designed a number of works that are valued in scientific circles for their high quality.
