Jürgen Uwe Ohlau (born March 24, 1940 in Emmendingen ; † December 21, 2015 ) was a German German scholar and historian .

Life

Ohlau completed a teaching degree in German , history and geography at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg . With a dissertation on the budget of the imperial city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber between 1350 and 1450, he was awarded a doctorate in medieval history in 1965. phil. PhD.

Already during his studies Ohlau worked for the Goethe-Institut as a lecturer in Scandinavia . Immediately after graduation, he was employed there permanently. He worked for the cultural institute in Sweden (1964/1965), India ( Hyderabad and Calcutta ; 1965–1975), Cairo (1975–1980), Munich (1980–1985) and New York (1985–1991) and rose to the position of director Employees on.

In 1991 Ohlau went to Dresden and built up the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony , of which he was director until his retirement in 2003. From April 2009 to July 2013 he was President of the Saxon Cultural Senate .
