The 1996/97 season was the 31st season of the Japan Ice Hockey League , the highest Japanese ice hockey division . The Seibu Prince Rabbits became champions for the ninth time in the club's history . Top scorer with 55 points was Ryan Fujita from Master Seibu Prince Rabbits.

In the regular season, each of the six teams played a total of 30 games. The four best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs in which the champions were played out. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a tie and zero points for a defeat.
