The Jayanca District is located in the Lambayeque Province in the Lambayeque Region in northwestern Peru . The district founded on June 21, 1825 has an area of ​​680.96 km². At the 2017 census, there were 17,204 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 11,681, in 2007 15,042. The district administration is located in the 61  m high small town Jayanca with 8185 inhabitants (as of 2017). The city of Jayanca is 43 km north of the regional capital Chiclayo on the road from Lambayeque to Olmos .

Geographical location

The Jayanca district is located in the coastal lowlands in the center of the Lambayeque province. A ridge, which belongs to the foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera , runs along the northeastern district border. The Río Motupe, a right tributary of the Río La Leche , flows through the district in a south-south-west direction. The Río La Leche runs along the southern district boundary in a westerly direction. Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the eastern and southern parts of the district. In the northwest extends the coastal desert of northwest Peru.

The Jayanca district is bordered to the west and northwest on the district Olmos , in the northeast to the districts Motupe and Salas , on the east by the district Incahuasi ( province Ferreñafe ), in the southeast of the district Pitipo (also in the province of Ferreñafe) and on the southwest by the Pacora district .
