Stewart came into contact with cars and motorsport early on. His father Bob Stewart, who competed in motorcycle races himself, ran a car dealership and garage. This got him a Jaguar C-Type , with which he could drive his first races. In 1952 he was discovered by racing driver David Murray and signed by his racing team Ecurie Ecosse . In 1953 he competed in Formula 1 at the British Grand Prix in a Cooper T20 , but slipped off the track in the wet on lap 79 and was unable to finish the race.
After an accident during training for the Eifel race in 1955, he ended his career. He then worked in auto sales in the UK and the United States .
After the repeated accidents and injuries of his brother, Jackie Stewart's parents initially banned motor sports, so that he concentrated on his other passion, clay pigeon shooting . In his autobiography, Jackie nevertheless referred to the great influence of his brother who brought him to motorsport.
