Joe Brown (born May 18, 1926 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana , † December 4, 1997 in New Orleans ) was an American boxer.
Professional career
Joe Brown played his first professional fight in New Orleans in 1943 at the age of 17 and won over four rounds on points. For the time being, however, it remained his only fight, as he was then called up for military service in the US Navy . After the end of the war he continued his boxing career, but lost his first two fights after the forced two-year break against Melvin Bartholomew and his debut opponent Leonard Caesar, against whom he boxed four times in the early stages of his career. He was also prematurely defeated by the much more experienced Sandy Saddler during this period.
With unspectacular but effective boxing with a good left hook, he then steadily worked his way up in the lightweight with wins over Virgil Akins, Isaac Logart and Teddy "Redtop" Davis.
In May 1956 he won first a non-title fight against world champion Wallace "Bud" Smith, then on August 4, 1956 he beat Smith again in the fight for the world championship. Brown was already over 30 at this point and therefore called himself "Old Bones". He won another fight against Smith by knocking out ten more defenses (a record at the time) in five years against the average boxers who were active at the time, including a narrow points victory over British attacking boxer Dave Charnley in London in 1961 .
On April 21, 1962 "Old Bones" lost its title to Carlos Ortiz, who was ten years his junior, at the age of 35 . Brown then fought on until 1970, but lost most of his fights. Among other things, he was defeated by Nicolino Locche in Argentina in 1963 . He finally ended his career at the age of 44.
In 1996, Brown was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
