Joe Strummer was born the son of a British diplomat. He had already promised a friend at boarding school that he would one day be a pop star. When he graduated from school, he first went to the Central School of Art and Design in London and later to the Newport College of Art in Wales to become a graphic designer. But the music increasingly took up his time, so that he soon dropped out of his graphic design training and went back to London and joined the squatters in the western part of the city. In the same period he founded the pub rock band "The 101ers", which he left after only one release to switch to the punk band London SS , which from then on called itself The Clash and became famous as such. Strummer sang, wrote and played his Fender Telecaster there , which, in combination with Mick Jones ' special guitar riffs, produced some important punk tracks and London Calling, one of the most successful albums in music history. However, there were always differences between the band members and therefore several changes in the line-up. After the breakup of The Clash, Strummer released his first solo LP Earthquake Weather in 1989 , later he was temporarily the singer of the Pogues as a substitute for the retired Shane MacGowan . In 1995 he accompanied the British Celtic folk punkers The Levellers on their UK Top 12 single "Just The One" on piano. After a long creative break, also caused by quarrels with the record company, his second solo album Rock Art And The X-Ray Style was released in 1999 with his new band The Mescaleros , with which he released another album in 2001: (Global A-Go-Go) . With Johnny Cash he played and sang the Bob Marley classic Redemption Song , which was released on Cash's box set Unearthed in 2003 .

Joe Strummer died completely unexpectedly on December 22nd, 2002 in his house of a congenital heart defect that was undetected during his lifetime . He left behind his wife Lucinda ('Luce') Tait and his two biological daughters Jazz and Lola Mellor, who came from his 14-year relationship with Gaby Salter.

In October 2003 his last album Streetcore was released posthumously .

Numerous bands dedicated songs or entire albums to Joe Strummer, including Beatsteaks , Rancid , GBH , Dropkick Murphys , The Gaslight Anthem and Attila the Stockbroker 's Barnstormer.

In 2006, British director Julien Temple made a documentary about Joe Strummer entitled Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten , which starred Bernie Rhodes , Mick Jones , Topper Headon , Bono , Jim Jarmusch , Johnny Depp , Matt Dillon and others.

The series John from Cincinnati , which started in the USA in 2007, used Strummer's song "Johnny Appleseed" as the title track.

The 2011 live CD "Live on Ten Legs" by Pearl Jam contains the Strummer song "Arms Aloft" from the album "Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Streetcore" (2003) as an opener.
