Johann Karl Magdalena von Vigny (born October 13, 1777 in Philippsthal , † January 22, 1846 in Koblenz ) was a Prussian major general and inspector of the 3rd engineering inspection.

Life

His parents were Major General Madeleine Touros d'Heinze (1729-1810) and his second wife Magdalene Fury de la Tour de Vigny. But he was born before marriage and later legitimized. His sister Dorothea (1776-1806) was married to Lieutenant General Karl Friedrich Franciscus von Steinmetz .

Military career

Vigny attended the engineering academy in Potsdam and was transferred on April 28, 1794 as a second lieutenant to the engineering corps of the Schweidnitz fortress . During the Fourth Coalition War he was in the Erfurt Fortress , became a prisoner of war with the surrender and was then made inactive.

After the Peace of Tilsit he was reinstated in the engineering corps of the Prussian Army and Vigny was promoted to staff captain by the end of October 1812 . During the Wars of Liberation he took part in the sieges of Glogau , Erfurt , Maubeuge , Philippeville , Rocroy , Givet and Landrecies . Vigny received the Iron Cross II. Class for Maubeuge and the First Class Cross for Landrecies. On January 22, 1814, he was promoted to captain with a salary of 900 thalers .

After the war, Vigny was transferred to the 3rd Engineer Brigade on March 27, 1816 and promoted to major on April 20, 1816 . As such, on November 14, 1817, he was appointed engineer officer of Platz der Bundesfestung Mainz . In this position Vigny received the on October 19, 1818 Knight's Cross of the Order of Leopold , and in 1825 the Service Cross . He was born on June 16 1826 engineering inspector of the first Rhenish Fortress inspection and on 30 March 1832 for leaving in place Lieutenant Colonel and on March 30, 1834 to Colonel promoted. On August 24, 1837, he was commissioned to take on the business as the inspector of the 3rd engineering inspection. Grand Duke Ludwig II awarded Vigny the Commander's Cross of the Order of Louis on October 18, 1837 . On May 19, 1838, he received his appointment as inspector and on September 10, 1840, promoted to major general. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV awarded him the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves, on April 18, 1844 . Vigny died on January 22, 1846 in Koblenz.

In his assessment from the year 1832, General von Müffling wrote : “This staff officer administers his post with as much expertise as prudence and thus continuously maintains the satisfaction of the fortress and the federal authorities. He is a versatile man. "

Vigny married Wilhelmine von Heydebrandt in Glatz on October 13, 1810 , from whom he divorced. On March 25, 1816, he married Charlotte Luise Müller (1790–1845) in Drebligar . The couple had several children:
