Wilhelm Freiherr von Müffling called Weiss (born September 8, 1778 in Halle (Saale) , † July 15, 1858 in Koblenz ) was a Prussian infantry general and governor of Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein .

Life

Wilhelm came from the noble family Müffling called Weiß . He was the third child of the later Prussian major general Friedrich Wilhelm von Müffling (1742-1808) and his wife Christiane Charlotte Wilhelmine, née von Borschitten (1743-1796).

Military career

Müffling was employed on May 1, 1790 as a private corporal in the "von Thadden" infantry regiment of the Prussian army . He fought with the regiment in the 1792/95 campaign against revolutionary France near Kaiserslautern and Trippstadt . Müffling took part in the blockade of Landau and Verdun , was wounded during the siege of Mainz and was used in the cannonade of Valmy . As a second lieutenant in October 1805 he became adjutant general to the regiment chief Johann Jeremias von Renouard . The following year he fought in the battle of Auerstedt , where Müffling was wounded again. After the Peace of Tilsit he was appointed captain of a company in the Guard Regiment. There Müffling became major on January 12, 1812 and in June commander of the 2nd battalion. During the spring campaign of 1813 , Müffling fought near Großgörschen , for which he received the Iron Cross II. Class and the Russian Order of Saint Anna II. Class, near Bautzen and Haynau . On June 19, 1813 he was appointed commander of the 2nd Guards Regiment on Foot . He led this in the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig and in the further course of the campaign near Paris . The Prussian King awarded him the Order of Pour le Mérite with Oak Leaves for his achievements, and the Russian Tsar honored his achievements with the Order of St. Vladimir III. Class.

After the Congress of Vienna , he was promoted to colonel on July 1, 1815 . On February 7, 1816, Müffling was given command of the troop brigade in Mainz and Luxembourg . Two years later he was promoted to inspector of the garrisons of the federal fortresses of Mainz and Luxembourg . On March 30, 1820, Müffling was promoted to major general with a patent from April 3, 1820, and as such was appointed as a deputy commander of Mainz on September 27, 1821. At the end of September 1824, he gave up the post and resigned as inspector. Leaving this position, Müffling was finally appointed Commandant of Mainz on October 22, 1829 with a bonus of 1,800 thalers . After the death of the previous governor Ferdinand Friedrich August von Württemberg , Wilhelm von Prussia became his successor and Müffling rose to the position of vice governor of Mainz in March 1834. On March 30, 1834 he received the character of lieutenant general and a year later the patent for his rank. After Müffling had worked in Mainz for 23 years, King Friedrich Wilhelm III appointed him. on October 8, 1839 as governor of Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary of service, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 1st Class with diamonds on March 23, 1840 as a special distinction .

Müffling retired on October 19, 1843 due to his deteriorating health as a general of the infantry, which was granted to him with an annual pension of 4,000 thalers.

Müffling was married three times. His first wife was Johanna Wilhelmine Charlotte Wucherer (1785–1809). The daughter Emma (1809-1830) emerged from the marriage and married Eduard Freiherr von Müffling (1801-1887) on August 18, 1829 in Ringhofen.

His second wife was Auguste von Thadden (1793–1874). The couple divorced and had the following children:

His third and last wife was Auguste Friederike Therese Ferdinande Leopoldine Freiin von Nordeck zur Rabenau (1798–1848), whom he married on April 16, 1830 in Frankfurt am Main. The couple had a daughter:
