Live and act

Johann Wöhr was born on November 1, 1842, the son of a doctor († 1876) in Rottenmann im Paltental , where he also spent the first years of his life and attended the local city school. He finished his school education in 1862 with the Matura and “excellent success” at a high school in Graz, to which he switched at the beginning of the third grade. After the third grade, he entered the Graz seminary, where he initially attended a public grammar school for a year and was then trained in so-called home studies. Subsequently he studied at the theological faculty of the University of Graz , where Josef Zapletal and Leopold Schuster were among his fellow students. In 1866 Wöhr finished his studies in theology, although he had contact with the later writer Peter Rosegger during his studies . Furthermore, in 1865 he was one of the organizers of the protest of the theology students against the inaugural speech of the rector Eduard Oscar Schmidt , a zoologist who represented Darwinism , alongside the later Prince-Bishop of Seckau, the aforementioned Leopold Schuster . On this occasion, together with Schuster and others, he also wrote the article The Theologians and the Ceremonial Address of November 15, 1865. A justification on behalf of the students of the theological faculty. This protest attracted attention across the country's borders, which meant that several CV connections such as Winfridia Breslau , Austria Innsbruck or Bavaria Bonn encouraged the group to set up their own connection in Graz. However, this only happened over 20 years later with the founding of the KÖHV Carolina Graz on August 18, 1888.

In the meantime, Wöhr was ordained a priest on July 9, 1865 and, after completing his studies in Graz, was appointed chaplain in Bad Aussee on August 1, 1866 . In Bad Aussee he also founded a Catholic journeymen's association and, in 1869, the first Austrian workers' association . When he reported on this foundation at the first Styrian Katholikentag in 1869, it caused a great stir. Also at this time he belonged to a deputation that was sent to Pope Pius IX. a large tome with hundreds of thousands of signatures a lively sixteen men in Graz Giants address that against incitements against the Holy See lodged protest handed. In addition, Wöhr founded a children's institution in Bad Aussee , to whose management he appointed the Sisters of the Cross . From Bad Aussee, Wöhr came to Altaussee on November 4, 1871 , where he worked until March 1, 1872 and then for a few months as a beneficiary's representative to Vordernberg and also as a chaplain to the Waasen parish near Leoben (May 1 to September 1, 1872 ) came.

Then in 1872 Wöhrs was transferred as chaplain to Graz-St. Andrä , where he continued to work in Adolph Kolping 's Catholic journeyman movement, but founded his own journeyman's association with Franz Sales Englhofer in the same year of his transfer . Contributing to his transfer, among other things, a conflict between Wöhr and his clerical colleagues such as dean Simon Hammer and chaplain Johann Stöger with the radical writer and correspondent of the Neue Freie Presse Rudolf Baldek . "In those liberal storms, he held hateful lectures against the Jesuits, which the three clergymen opposed in armored posters." The Grazer Volksblatt announced. Baldek then sued for libel , which culminated in a trial before the jury in Wels , where the posters were printed. The three clergymen were subsequently sentenced to short prison terms, which were later commuted to fines. Most of the fines were then released from the three convicts by pardon.

Appointed Vice-President of the Diocesan Association in 1874 at the side of the President and Spiritual Councilor , Josef Schindler , he was promoted to President of the Association in 1876 and was appointed as choir vicar and cathedral chaplain at the Graz Cathedral in the same year . During his work, the old house of the diocesan association in Sackstrasse was sold; Furthermore, Wöhr was responsible for the new building. Within the association he brought numerous innovations, such as the establishment of a savings bank for the members or the establishment of funds for bonuses, etc. This also included further construction activities and numerous other commitments. He also acted as a corps chaplain in the Graz Citizens Corps and was secretary of the priests' association in the diocese of Graz-Seckau at least since 1885 . In 1878 he was elected to the Styrian state parliament from the constituency of Gröbming-Bad Aussee because of his first priestly activity in Ausseerland because of his mentioned initiatives , to which he belonged for the entire 5th legislative period from September 24, 1878 to July 14, 1883. During this time he was considered "the horror of the liberals" and represented the target sales of Rohitsch-Sauerbrunn in this state parliament period .

On March 1, 1888, Wöhr, who was considered an excellent pulpit speaker, especially in Latin , and worked for years as a folk writer, primarily as a children's book author, but also as a writer of plays, was made a member of the Emperor Franz Joseph Cathedral Chapter of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau. In addition, at the beginning of March 1888 he was appointed real prince-bishop consistorial councilor and consultant. When the KÖHV Carolina Graz was founded on August 18, 1888, Wöhr was the godfather of the foundation and shortly thereafter was made an honorary member. He also took part in a pilgrimage to Rome in 1888 and made various trips to Germany , Switzerland and Austria. On March 2, 1896 Wöhr died, who among other things works like Agnes vom Paltental under the pseudonym Hans Wiesing . A historical narrative. As early as May 16, 1892, he was diagnosed with obesity in the heart muscles, which, among other things, resulted in paralysis. In May 1892, various Austrian newspapers even reported a stroke in Wöhr. Relaxation holidays in the country and a cure in Karlsbad did little to improve his health. At the time of his death the monsignor held, among other things, the honorary title of clergyman and was a member of the Upper Styrian mess brotherhood until the end. After his death, various trade fairs were held in his honor, including in his former home; Furthermore, on March 9, 1896, the Catholic Masters Association in Graz, which Wöhr had co-founded and of which he was Honorary Chairman, unveiled a plaque in his honor.
