Harmannstein is a cadastral municipality in the market town of Großschönau in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria .
geography
Harmannstein is located in northwestern Lower Austria ( Waldviertel ) at an altitude of approx. 730 meters south of Weitra.
The village has 101 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).
history
The history of the place goes back to at least 1150. The name refers to Hadmar II von Kuenring , who owned a castle west of the place at today's Johannesberg , which was the court and administrative seat for a larger area. Later the name was transferred to the place below the former castle.
Culture and sights
- To the west of the village is the 839 meter high Johannesberg, which is visible from afar and is part of the European watershed . The wall and moat of the former Kuenringerburg can still be seen on its summit plateau . By 1381 at the latest, the castle had already fallen into disrepair.
