Joseph Mayseder (born October 26, 1789 in Vienna ; † November 21, 1863 ibid) was an Austrian violin virtuoso and composer .

Life

Joseph Mayseder showed great musical talent even as a child and received violin lessons from Joseph Suche (1797), Anton Wranitzky (from 1798) and Ignaz Schuppanzigh . At the age of eleven, in 1800, he already appeared in public at one of the famous Augarten concerts . He received piano and composition lessons from Emanuel Aloys Förster . The first dated composition dates from 1803, the string quintet in F minor (MV 88). In the same year, on December 26, 1803, participation in the performance of the oratorio The Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross by Joseph Haydn under Haydn's direction.

From 1810 he was concertmaster of the court opera orchestra , from 1816 violin soloist at the Vienna court orchestra and from 1836 its director. In 1835 he was appointed imperial chamber virtuoso. He was considered an important quartet player and was also a teacher and composer for his instrument. As a teacher he is considered to be the founder of the so-called Viennese violin school. Niccolò Paganini spoke of him with great respect.

From 1830 he received numerous awards and honorary memberships. In 1839 he was elected to the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome together with Pierre Rode and Pierre Baillot . In 1862 he was honored by being awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order . He was also an honorary member of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna . Most of his 70 or so compositions were written for his own performance. He was one of 50 composers who submitted a variation on a waltz by Anton Diabelli for Part II of the Collection of Patriotic Artists' Association (published in 1824).

He rests in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 0, row 1, number 36). In 1876, Maysedergasse in Vienna's Innere Stadt (1st district) was named after him.
