Josef Abel , occasionally Joseph Abel (born August 22, 1764 in Aschach an der Donau , Upper Austria , † October 4, 1818 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter .

Life

Josef Abel was the son of the master carpenter Johann Melchior Abel. After finishing school, Abel began a commercial apprenticeship in Aschach. There he aroused the interest of a passing official with spontaneous drawings , who recommended him to the art academy in Vienna .

Abel passed the entrance examination in 1782 with flying colors and due to his talent he was completely waived his school fees. He became a student of the lecturers Heinrich Friedrich Füger and Franz Anton von Zauner . In 1794 Abel's picture Daedalus and Icarus was awarded a gold medal at an exhibition at the Academy. As the best student of his year, Abel received an extremely generous scholarship through Füger's agency, which he used in 1801 for a six-year study visit to Rome . Before that, however, Prince Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski hired him in 1795/96 as a drawing and private tutor to Poland on his estates.

In 1796 Abel returned to Vienna and worked there as a freelance painter, but was still closely connected to the Academy through his friendship with his teacher Füger. In the summer of 1801 Abel then hiked a large part of the route to Rome via Venice and Florence in order to save travel costs. There he soon joined the German Romantics . Through his studies and copies of Raffael and Michelangelo , Abel u. a. the painters Johann Christian Reinhart and Joseph Anton Koch . But Bertel Thorvaldsen also found some inspiration and inspiration from Abel. Abel joined the St. Luke Guild of Artists in Rome . An important work from this period is the portrait of the Fries family; Imperial Count Moritz Christian Fries looked after the Austrian scholarship holders of the Academy in Rome.

In 1807 Abel returned to Vienna and was inspired by his teacher Füger from the general enthusiasm and admiration of Klopstock . In a friendly competition with his colleague Martin Johann Schmidt , known as Kremser Schmidt, Abel created a huge picture with the title Klopstock in the Elysium : Klopstock becomes Klopstock, guided by a muse, received by Homer at the head of the most famous poets of old and modern times introduced into the Elysium. The landscape for this work was done by Johann Christian Reinhart .

On February 8, 1815 Abel was appointed a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

On October 4, 1818, Josef Abel died of emaciation in Vienna (1st, Inner City ) at the age of 54 . Since Abel had no family, the city of Vienna inherited his impressive work library. His tomb was abandoned around 1920.
