Joseph Sifakis ( Greek Ιωσήφ Σηφάκης ; born December 26, 1946 in Iraklio , Crete ) is a Greco-French computer scientist and Turing Prize winner . He contributed significantly to the emergence of model testing and its spread in the industry.

Life

Sifakis studied electrical engineering at the National Technical University of Athens and received a PhD in computer science from the University of Joseph Fourier Grenoble I on a French scholarship .

He works in Grenoble for the Verimag laboratory of the Center national de la recherche scientifique, which he co-founded and headed from 1993 to 2006 . There he is head of research in the field of distributed and complex systems, and researches in particular on component-based design, modeling and analysis of real-time systems , with a focus on correct-by-construction techniques. He is also the recipient of the CNRS silver medal in 2001. He is also head of the CARNOT Institute for Intelligent Software and Systems in Grenoble and one of the chairmen of ARTEMISIA , the industry association within the European embedded systems technology platform ARTEMIS .

Sifakis is the scientific coordinator of the European networks of excellence Artist2 and ArtistDesign for research in the field of embedded systems, and founded the International Conference on Computer Aided Verification with Edmund M. Clarke , Robert Kurshan and Amir Pnueli . He is also a member of several editorial advisory boards for academic journals and has been a member of Academia Europaea since 2008 .

Awards

In 2007, Sifakis received the Turing Award together with Edmund M. Clarke and Allen Emerson , from whom he worked independently on model testing from 1981 , and is thus honored for his pioneering work in both theoretical and practical areas of the specification and verification of parallel systems . The following year, Nicolas Sarkozy appointed him Grand Officier des Ordre national du Mérite . He has been a member of the Académie des sciences since 2011 . In 2015 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2017 to the National Academy of Engineering .
