Juan José Asenjo Pelegrina (born October 15, 1945 in Sigüenza , Guadalajara Province , Spain ) is Archbishop of Seville .

Life

Juan José Asenjo Pelegrina studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary of Siguenza-Guadalajara . Asenjo Pelegrina received on 21 September 1969, the sacrament of Holy Orders . In 1971 he obtained a degree in Catholic theology from the Burgos Theological Faculty .

From 1971 to 1974 Juan José Asenjo Pelegrina taught ecclesiology and church history at the seminary in Sigüenza. From 1974 to 1977 he was sub-rain of the Sigüenza seminary. In 1977 Asenjo was sent to Rome for further studies . He received his doctorate in ecclesiastical history in 1979 at the Pontifical Gregorian University . In addition, Asenjo Pelegrina obtained a degree in archival studies and library science at the Vatican Library School affiliated to the Vatican Secret Archives and the Vatican Apostolic Library . From 1979 to 1988 Asenjo was director of the university campus "Nuestra Señora de la Estrella" in Sigüenza. He was also director of the diocesan archives of the diocese of Sigüenza-Guadalajara from 1979 to 1981 and from 1980 to 1982 delegate for education. In 1985 Juan José Asenjo became canon at the Cathedral of Sigüenza and delegate for the art and cultural assets of the Diocese of Sigüenza-Guadalajara. In 1986 he founded Abside magazine . From 1994 to 1997 he was Vice Rector of the pilgrimage site “Nuestra Señora de la Salud” in Barbatona . In addition, Asenjo Pelegrina was Vice Secretary of the Spanish Bishops' Conference from 1993 to 1997 .

On 27 February 1997 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Iziriana and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Toledo . He was ordained bishop on April 20, 1997 by the Archbishop of Toledo, Francisco Álvarez Martínez , in the Cathedral of Toledo ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Sigüenza-Guadalajara, José Sánchez González , and the Bishop Emeritus of Sigüenza-Guadalajara, Jesús Pla Gandía . Juan José Asenjo Pelegrina gave himself the motto Ex Alto ("From above"), which comes from the Gospel according to Luke ( Lk 1.78  EU ). In addition, Asenjo was Secretary General of the Spanish Bishops' Conference from 1998 to 2003. On July 28, 2003, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Cordoba . The inauguration took place on September 27, 2003 in the Episcopal Church of Cordoba .

On November 13, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as coadjutor archbishop of Seville . The inauguration took place on January 17th, 2009 in Seville Cathedral . On November 5, 2009, Juan José Asenjo Pelegrina succeeded Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo OFM , who resigned for reasons of age, Archbishop of Seville.
