Julius Friedrich Wilhelm Louis von Safft (born August 2, 1812 in Breslau , † July 13, 1887 in Hirschberg ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Julius was the son of the later Prussian Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Safft (1780–1861) and his wife Karoline, née von Schmeling-Diringshofen (1789–1838).

Military career

Safft visited the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . At his father's request, he first returned home in mid-April 1828 and then joined the Guard Artillery Brigade of the Prussian Army as a gunner on August 2, 1829 . From October 1829 he attended the United Artillery and Engineering School for two years . In the meantime promoted to Portepeefähnrich and transferred to the 5th Artillery Brigade at the end of February 1831 , Safft completed the artillery and engineering school from October 1832 for a further two years. As a second lieutenant he was appointed artillery officer on December 4, 1834 with a patent dated October 20, 1834. From October 1840 to June 1841 Safft was commanded to the teaching squadron, advanced to prime lieutenant in June 1847 and as such took part in the battle at Kurnik in 1848 during the suppression of the uprising in Posen . When he was promoted to captain on June 30, 1852, he was transferred to the 6th Artillery Regiment and the following year he was appointed battery chief . On September 14, 1860, Safft was transferred to Danzig as an artillery officer and promoted to major on September 9, 1861 . Left in this position, he was transferred to the 6th Artillery Brigade on July 7, 1864, and on December 6, 1864, he was appointed commander of Division I in the fortress artillery regiment No. 5. As a lieutenant colonel , Safft led a division of the 1st Reserve Field Artillery Regiment in the fighting near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz in 1866 during the war against Austria .

After the peace agreement , Safft rose on October 30, 1866 to the command of the 2nd Division of the Silesian Field Artillery Regiment No. 6. From August 2, 1867, he acted as regimental commander and was promoted to colonel on March 22, 1868 in this capacity . With the award of the Red Eagle Order III. Class with loop and the permission to wear his regiment uniform took Safft on February 12, 1870 his parting with inn . Ten days later he was put up for disposal with his pension and the uniform of the 6th Artillery Brigade .

On the occasion of the war against France Safft was reactivated and used for the duration of the mobile relationship from November 2, 1870 to March 31, 1871 as commander of the immobile artillery of the 5th Army Corps . In recognition of his services rendered, Kaiser Wilhelm I granted him the character of Major General on May 15, 1873 .

Safft married Klara Marie Sofie Helling (1825–1901) in Posen on September 23, 1843 . The marriage had two children:
