The penal hospital in North Rhine-Westphalia is located in Fröndenberg / Ruhr . It is one of the largest in Europe and also one of the best secured of its kind. It has been proven that it complies with the safety standards of a correctional facility . The hospital is designed solely to provide medical care for prisoners . For safety reasons, the hospital may not be used for civil purposes. The correctional hospital is about 1 km northeast of the city center on a hill. The total size of the property is approx. 55,000 m². The entire hospital is surrounded by a 4 m high wall; the only access is at the front of the complex.

history

The hospital was originally built in 1979 as a municipal hospital in Fröndenberg. In 1984 it was rebuilt for the penal system and since then has been the only penal hospital in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 2011 the hospital was finally legally classified as a correctional facility, which resulted in an expansion of the surrounding area. In the course of this expansion, a 4 m high fence was drawn around the outside of the wall. Movable video surveillance systems and increased outdoor lighting were also added. No inmate has managed to break out of the prison hospital in the past.

The house has three operating theaters, examination and treatment rooms for the outpatient departments of the various specialties, an X-ray department, a department for physical therapy , internal medicine, surgery, anesthesia, maxillofacial surgery, ear, nose and throat diseases, orthopedics, clinical-chemical hematological laboratory. The care areas are divided into 7 stations. The total number of beds is 228, plus 8 beds in the intensive treatment unit. In 2006 the hospital was expanded to include a psychiatric department.

The hospital has a helicopter landing pad for the fast and safe transport of the seriously injured.

With over 300 employees, the correctional hospital is the largest employer in the city of Fröndenberg. Around 3,500 inpatients are treated annually. The number of outpatient presentations is around 7,500. The hospital also accepts sick offenders from other federal states, provided that there is capacity.

In the media

The hospital gained notoriety through the well-known criminal offenders Dieter Zurwehme , Jan Zocha and Frank Schmökel , who were treated there. Usually, however, the hospital does not reveal the names of its patients in order to avoid attempts at exemption.

On April 18, 2004, Jan Zocha sawed up his cell bars of the penal hospital in North Rhine-Westphalia with 23 diamond files and climbed the meter-high outer wall with a four-meter-long construction made of fabric and furniture parts, on which he was placed at the last second.
