history

founding

The KDFB (1903–1916: Katholischer Frauenbund (KFB), 1916–1921: Katholischer Frauenbund Deutschlands (KFD), 1921–1983: Katholischer Deutscher Frauenbund, KDF) was founded on November 16, 1903 in Cologne as part of the women's movement of that time . The founding chairman from 1903 to 1912 was Emilie Hopmann . Minna Bachem-Sieger (1903-1919) and Hedwig Dransfeld (1912-1925), who entered the Reichstag in 1919 as one of the first women, were co-founders and vice chairmen of the Catholic Women's Association in Cologne .

Dransfeld worked closely with the Swedish-German women's rights activist Ellen Ammann . In 1904 (in the same year as Emy Gordon in Würzburg ) Ammann founded the branch association of the Catholic Women's Association in Munich . On her initiative and with the support of many other women such as Marie Zettler and Countess Pauline von Montgelas , all existing Bavarian branches joined together on December 6, 1911 to form the “Bavarian State Association of the Catholic Women's Association”, which in 2018 with 165,000 women became the KDFB unit with the largest number of members counts. The Catholic Women's Association made contact with international associations early on and in 1910 became a founding member of the International League, today the World Union of Catholic Women's Organizations (WUCWO / UMOFC).

After the active and passive right to vote for women was introduced in Germany in November 1918, Ellen Ammann, who founded the Munich branch of the Catholic Women's Association in 1904 and established the Bavarian State Association of the Catholic Women's Association in 1911, became one of the first female members of the Bavarian State Parliament . To this day, KDFB women not only work in state parliaments, but also in the Bundestag, in district parliaments, district parliaments and as city councilors.

An important goal of the Catholic German Women's Association is to impart basic political knowledge to women, to familiarize them with current political and social issues and developments and to train their ability to argue and discuss. Socio-political education work should also help women become aware of their social and political responsibility as Christians and motivate them to actively participate in social and political life. As part of its socio-political education work, the women's association regularly takes a public position on current issues relevant to women's politics.

In Berlin, a multigenerational house is run for single women of all ages, such as students, professionals and senior citizens.

The Catholic German Women's Federation calls for the ordination of women in the Roman Catholic Church and calls for a reform of the Roman Catholic doctrine of sexual morality .
