During the late antiquity there was an important hilltop settlement on Tonovcov grad above the town . Kobarid is best known as one of the focal points of the Isonzo battles in World War I, especially for the Battle of Good Freit . In 1918 the place was occupied by the Italian army and came under the Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1920 to the Kingdom of Italy. During the Second World War Kobarid was under the control of the Tito partisans from September to November 1943 , and again from May 1945. Through the Paris Peace Treaty in 1946 , Kobarid finally came to Yugoslavia and from 1991/92 to Slovenia.
Culture
In Kobarid, Mediterranean and Alpine influences crystallize equally. You can often see geraniums on the balconies and oleanders in large pots on the street. The Friulian style church is also typical of the area . The Kobarid Museum and the “Path of Peace” educational hiking trail are a reminder of the bloody battles of the First World War .
tourism
Today the community lives mainly from tourism. For hikers, Kobarid is the starting point for the Krn massif, water sports enthusiasts appreciate the white water of the Soča. In addition, Kobarid has become a popular paragliding center.
