Karl Franz Neander von Petersheide (also Karl Franz Neander von Nicopolis , Carl Franz Neander von Pettersheydaw ; born June 6, 1626 in Neisse , Principality of Neisse ; † February 5, 1693 ibid) was titular bishop of Nicopolis and auxiliary bishop as well as vicar general and official in Breslau . From 1670 he was also the district president of the episcopal principality of Neisse.

Life

Karl Franz Neander came from the Silesian noble family Petersheide , which derived its name from the place of the same name Petersheide near Neisse. His parents were Andreas Ferdinand and Anna, daughter of the Breslau governor, Balthasar Heinrich von Oberg.

Karl Franz completed the Humaniora at the Neiss parish high school and was accepted there as a poet in the sodality of the Assumption of Mary . From 1643 he studied for three years philosophy at the Charles University in Prague and was there at the Sodality of the Annunciation . On 23 December 1645 he was the Strachover Abt Kryšpín Fuk of Hradiště, at the same time auxiliary bishop of Prague, was the minor orders issued. On August 3, 1646 he was appointed canon at the Wroclaw Cathedral . From June 1, 1647 he studied theology at the University of Cracow , where Auxiliary Bishop Albert von Lipnicki ordained him on August 3, 1646. After completing his studies, he was appointed to the Wroclaw Cathedral Chapter on August 31, 1650 . Before that he was a scholastic at the Breslauer Kreuzstift . He soon gained a reputation in the cathedral chapter. After the death of Bishop Karl Ferdinand in 1655, he and his uncle, Canon Kaspar Heinrich von Oberg, were sent to Neisse, where the episcopal estate was to be recorded. In 1656 he was appointed Apostolic Protonotary .

After the election of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, Bishop of Breslau, in 1656, Karl Franz Neander was appointed by him to be his deputy in the potential business and on June 26, 1662, Pope Alexander VIII appointed him titular bishop of Nicopolis . However, the confirmation was delayed by the death of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in 1662. Neander also played a prominent role in the election of Archduke Karl Joseph, who was only 13 years old, as bishop in 1663.

It is not known when and by whom Neander was ordained bishop. In any case, acts of auxiliary bishopric are documented for March 9, 1663, since on this day he granted minor orders to 17 candidates for the priesthood . Then he was sent by the cathedral chapter to the emperor in Vienna. On June 3, 1663, he presented the papal confirmation as authorized representative of Archduke Karl Joseph and five days later took possession of the diocese on behalf of Karl Joseph. However, he died on January 27, 1664. On February 15, Auxiliary Bishop Neander held the Requiem for him.

Before the election of Sebastian von Rostock's successor on April 21, 1664, Auxiliary Bishop Neander held the office of Heliggeist. Because of the papal confirmation, Canon Johann Brunetti was sent to Rome, with Neander accompanying him to Vienna in order to obtain the necessary letters of recommendation for the curia from the emperor . Since the election of Rostock was objected to in Rome, Pope Alexander VII appointed the previous archdeacon Sebastian von Rostock “on the recommendation of the cathedral chapter” as bishop of Wroclaw “from his own authority”. The corresponding papal decree was presented to the chapter on March 5, 1665. Auxiliary Bishop Neander and the abbot of the sand pen, Georg Pohl, assisted at the enthronement on Maundy Thursday . The episcopal ordination on White Sunday , April 12, 1665, took place by Auxiliary Bishop Neander, with the assistance of Abbot Georg Pohl and the provost of the Neisser Kreuzherrenstift, Franz Nentwig. On May 6th J. Neander accompanied his bishop on the solemn entry into Neisse. On May 26, 1665 he was promoted to archdeacon at the Breslau Cathedral. In this position he visited all churches and parishes of his archdeaconate from May 13, 1666 to October 15, 1667. At the same time he gave the sacrament of Confirmation in many places . Important ecclesiastical-historical, statistical and legal news emerge from the visitation protocols received.

When Bishop Rostock dismissed Neisse district president Johann Heinrich Heymann von Rosenthal in autumn 1670, he transferred this office to Auxiliary Bishop Neander, who now took up residence in Neisse. After the early death of Bishop Rostock on June 9, 1671, Neander held the solemn Requiem on June 30. Together with Canon Weinzierle, he acted as executor of the will.

Rostock's successor Cardinal Friedrich was elected on September 3, 1671 . Since he initially lived in Rome, he transferred the diocese administration to the auxiliary bishop Neander, which he exercised until the end of September 1676. In addition, he continued to head the Neiss government. On April 29, 1677 he was commissioned by Cardinal Friedrich to visit his archdeaconate in Breslau. Due to age, he again transferred the diocese administration to him and the scholastic Johann Brunetti in 1681, but this was short-lived since Cardinal Friedrich died on February 19, 1682.

Since the cathedral chapter could not agree on a successor, a vacancy arose which lasted more than a year. It was not until June 30, 1683 that the Teutonic Order Master Franz Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg was elected Bishop of Breslau. Since he did not reside in Breslau either, Auxiliary Bishop Neander was elected diocese administrator by the cathedral chapter on October 1. The new bishop confirmed the office of Neiss government president and appointed him both official and vicar general. Because of the abundance of his offices, he had to delegate some of his duties to the diocesan clergy.

Much evidence has been preserved about his auxiliary bishop's actions during his more than 30 years of activity. I.a. He consecrated sub- deacons in 1492, deacons in 1433 and priests in 1407. In addition , he appointed eight abbots, one abbess and 51 nuns and signed 56,095 people. From the diocese churches he consecrated the castle chapel in Koschentin , the parish church in Kühschmalz , in Wroclaw the St. Joseph Church near St. Adalbert, the Capuchin Church and the Church of the Augustinian Choir Women, the Franciscan Church in Gleiwitz and the field church St. Briccius at Kostenthal . In spite of all demands he always tried to maintain religious life.

Karl Franz Nander von Petersheide died on February 5, 1693 in Breslau and was buried three days later in the Neiss collegiate church. An epitaph was set in memory of him in the Wenceslas Chapel of Wroclaw Cathedral . Ten years before his death he had a memorial erected for his deceased parents in the parish church in Neiss, on which Ezekiel's vision of the resurrection of the dead was depicted.

In his will he gave the Breslau cathedral church and the cathedral chapter rich. He bequeathed his library to the Jesuit College in Breslau . For the salvation of his soul , he donated an anniversarium and a solemn high mass on the feast of his namesake, St. Charles Borromeo .
