Karl Swiedack
Karl Swiedack (born May 23, 1815 in Vienna , † August 2, 1888 in Vienna; pseudonym: Carl Elmar or Karl Elmar ) was an Austrian playwright and an important representative of the old Viennese folk theater . He was also a stage actor , librettist and journalist .
Life
Karl Swiedack was initially a merchant, then he served for a few years as a soldier in the 2nd Artillery Regiment . Even then he was active in literature and wrote articles for magazines under the pseudonym Elmar , as this was not allowed to him as a soldier. Due to an editorial error by a Viennese magazine, his incognito was released one day , as his real name was inadvertently printed under a humorous sketch about life as an artilleryman. He received a warning from his military superior for this, but at the same time also the hint to continue to publish future articles under his pseudonym. So he did it and since then has written most of his works as Carl Elmar and also as Karl Elmar .
After his military service, he turned to acting in Vienna from 1840. As early as 1841 Swiedack was active as a theater poet and was able to achieve popular success with his first play, Die Wette um mein Herz in the theater in der Josefstadt . He wrote a total of around 120 popular stage plays, most of which were successful. Swiedack's role model was the Viennese playwright Ferdinand Raimund , to whom he also dedicated a play of the same name. In addition to his theatrical work, Karl Swiedack also wrote poems, novellas and libretti for musical works. His collaboration with the Viennese composer Franz von Suppè , who also musically framed numerous plays by Swiedack, should be emphasized. Karl Swiedack's last piece was Schön-Wien , which premiered in 1882 . Then he retired from the stage and in the last years of his life turned to humorous-satirical journalism , including for the Viennese newspaper Figaro .
