Karl Wilhelm Henning von Kameke (born September 28, 1763 in Gumenz, Rummelsburg district , † February 18, 1842 in Danzig ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commander of the 8th Landwehr Brigade.

Life

Karl was the son of the Prussian lieutenant ret. D. and heir to Gumenz Jürgen von Kameke (1724–1784) and his wife Karoline, née Steyetz von Görnitz (1721–1799) from the Gottswalde family.

Military career

Kameke came on February 1, 1777 as a Junker in the Hussar Regiment "von Belling" of the Prussian Army and took part in the battles near Zwickau and Gabel in 1778/79 during the War of the Bavarian Succession . On July 24, 1782 he became a cornet and on December 10, 1786 second lieutenant . In 1787 Kameke took part in the campaign in Holland . During the First Coalition War he fought in the battle of Kaiserslautern and the skirmishes near Bouvines, Hasnon, Saarbrücken , Schwalm, Kirrweiler , Weidenthal and Edesheim. For the capture of a French general at Bouvines, Kameke was awarded the order Pour le Mérite on August 23, 1793 and was promoted to staff captain until July 1794 . On September 6, 1800 he was promoted to Rittmeister and squadron chief . During the Fourth Coalition War , Kameke was captured when he surrendered near Lübeck.

After the war, he was promoted to major on September 3, 1807 , and on April 10, 1808, he joined the Pomeranian Hussar Regiment (No. 5) as squadron chief . On December 3, 1810 Kameke received his farewell as a Lieutenant Colonel with pension .

In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , Kameke returned to the army and was employed on May 5, 1813 as a lieutenant colonel and commander in the 3rd Pomeranian Landwehr Infantry Regiment. During the war he fought at the siege of Stettin , was wounded in the storming of Wittenberg and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

After the war, on May 18, 1816, Kameke joined the salaried tribe of the Danzig Landwehr Infantry Regiment as a colonel . On September 15, 1816, he was appointed regimental commander and at the same time he was entrusted with the management of business as the commander of the Danzig Fortress. On March 12, 1820, Kameke was appointed commander of the 5th Landwehr Brigade and in this position was promoted to major general on July 1, 1820 with a patent from April 4, 1820 . On May 29, 1821 he became commander of the 8th Landwehr Brigade. On July 26, 1825 Kameke got the Service Cross and on 24 March 1829 to say goodbye to the character of lieutenant-general and the statutory pension. He died on February 18, 1842 in Danzig and was buried on February 24, 1842 in the St. Johann civil cemetery.

After his wife's death, on April 28, 1818, he married Pauline Steffens (1799–1866), a daughter of the businessman Karl Gottlieb Steffens (1750–1825) from Danzig. The daughter Maria (1824-1894) emerged from the marriage and married Theophil Karl Johann von Somnitz (1819-1859) in 1846 .
