Keith Michael Patrick Cardinal O'Brien (born March 17, 1938 in Ballycastle , County Antrim , Northern Ireland , † March 19, 2018 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh .

Life

Keith Patrick Michael O'Brien studied chemistry , mathematics , philosophy and Catholic theology after leaving school . In April 1965 he received the sacrament of ordination and then worked as a parish chaplain, school pastor and math teacher. From 1978 to 1980 he was Spiritual at St Andrew's College Drygrange ( Roxburghshire ) and then Rector of Saint Mary's College in Blairs near Aberdeen until he was appointed Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh in 1985. The episcopal ordination donated him on August 5, 1985 Gordon Cardinal Gray ; The consecrators were Bruno Bernhard Heim and Thomas Joseph Winning . From 2001 O'Brien headed the Scottish Bishops' Conference . Pope John Paul II appointed him cardinal in 2003 with the titular church Santi Gioacchino ed Anna al Tuscolano , which was held before him by the Viennese Cardinal Hans Hermann Groër .

From 2001 to 2013 he was Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of Scotland of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem , and since 2003 its Grand Cross Knight.

In November 2012, according to can. 401 §1 CIC offered the Pope his resignation as diocesan bishop at the end of his 75th year on March 17, 2013. Pope Benedict XVI accepted this offer. After the press reported allegations of "inappropriate behavior" on February 23, 2013 it was announced that the Pope had accepted the resignation on February 18, as of February 25. In this context, O'Brien also decided not to participate in the 2013 conclave . There he would have been the only cardinal from Great Britain. On May 15, 2013, the Vatican announced that O'Brien would leave Scotland for a few months for prayer, spiritual renewal and penance after consultation with the new Pope Francis, for the same reasons that he had not attended the conclave .

On March 20, 2015, Pope Francis accepted Keith Patrick O'Brien's request for a waiver of cardinal privileges and rights.

Cardinal O'Brien died on March 19, 2018 as a result of head injuries sustained in a fall the previous month.

Act

On the 40th anniversary of the passage of the Scottish Abortion Act on May 31, 2007, O'Brien said that a society had to be rebuilt that was happy to take on new life. He called on Catholic politicians to stop working on the "horrific crime of abortion". 40 years ago it was argued that illegal abortions kill women and that they must therefore be decriminalized, that abortions are only carried out in extreme cases and that the medical examination is very strict. Many of the arguments in favor of abortion have turned out to be false. In Scotland, abortion kills as many children every day as an assembly hall full of schoolchildren.

In a March 3, 2012 article in the Sunday Telegraph , O'Brien called plans to introduce same-sex marriage "madness" and "a grotesque overthrow of a globally recognized human right."

On February 22, 2013, it was announced that O'Brien had expressed support in an interview with BBC Scotland about the possibility of exempting priests from choosing to live celibacy.

accusations

In February 2013 allegations were made that O'Brien had behaved inappropriately towards four seminarians in the early 1980s . The Observer reported improper advances following evening prayers and improper physical contact on February 23, 2013; three active and one former priest had submitted a letter of appeal to the apostolic nuncio in England, Antonio Mennini , in the week before February 11, 2013. O'Brien initially had the allegations rejected through a spokesman. In early March, O'Brien stated in a written statement that there have been times "when my sexual behavior has fallen below the standard expected of me as a priest, archbishop and cardinal." He asked forgiveness from the whole Church and asked forgiveness from all those he had offended with his behavior. He would no longer take part in the public life of the Catholic Church in Scotland. In March 2015, Pope Francis accepted his waiver of all rights and duties as a cardinal.
