Korgas ( Kazakh قورعاس قالاسى, Qorğas Qalası ; uyghur قورغاس شەھىرى, Ⱪorƣas Xəⱨiri ; Chinese  霍尔果斯 市 , Pinyin Huò'ěrguǒsī Shì ) is an independent city in the Kazakh Autonomous District Ili of the Uyghur Autonomous Region Xinjiang in the People's Republic of China . Other spellings are Horgos and Khorgos .

Korgas was founded on June 26, 2014 by the State Council of the PRC. The following areas were spun off from the Huocheng district and combined to form the new urban district:

  • Congregation Iche Gashan (伊 车 嘎 乡 乡),
  • Pasture place Mohur (莫 乎 尔 牧场),
  • Border station Korgas (霍尔果斯 口岸) on the border with Kazakhstan ,
  • Production and Reconstruction Corps No. 61 (兵团 61 团),
  • Production and Reconstruction Corps No. 62 (兵团 62 团).

Korgas has an area of ​​approx. 1,900 km² and in 2014 had about 85,000 inhabitants.

The city lies on the border with Kazakhstan and is being developed by China into an international logistics and trade hub as part of the “ One Belt, One Road ” concept. By 2016, more than 3 billion US dollars were invested in this. The “Khorgos-East Gate” goods transshipment point was completed on 5,740 hectares in 2016 - it is also known as the “ dry port ” and also includes a free trade zone . Two Chinese companies have taken over 49 percent of the shares in "Khorgos-East Gate", including the world's largest marine logistics company COSCO .

In 2011, 2,000 containers were handled.

In Korgas (as of 2018) 100,000 standard containers can be handled per year; in the long term the number is expected to rise to 500,000.

In Europe and China the standard gauge (1435 mm) predominates, in Russia and Kazakhstan the broad gauge . Therefore, containers have to be reloaded in Korgas .
