Kimbach is a district of Bad König in the Odenwaldkreis in southern Hesse .

geography

Geographical location

Kimbach is located in the southeast of Hesse, in the so-called rear Odenwald . The place is located in an elongated, narrow side valley of the Mümling , through which the stream of the same name flows. The valley is flanked in the north by the Hengstenberg (375 m), in the east by the "Vielbrunner Höhe" (460 m) and in the south by the ridge of the "Alten Momart" (379 m). The Kimbach district has an area of 459.7 ha. The largest extension is 3.5 km from the Wacholderberg in the north to the Herrngrund in the south, the shortest with 1.1 km from the Odenwaldbaum in the west to the Käsebrünnchen in the east. Landesstraße 3318 leads through the street village .

Neighboring villages, municipalities and cities

Kimbach borders in the west on the core town Bad König , in the north on the villages Fürstengrund and Breitenbrunn (Lützelbach) , in the east on Vielbrunn (town Michelstadt) and in the south on Momart .

Flowing waters

The spring water of the Kimbach collects below the Inhelle (464 m) in the so-called "Bachspring". From there the brook meanders through the valley floodplain and covers a distance of 7 km to the confluence with the Mümling, with a gradient of 190 meters. In the first half of the 20th century, its water drove five mills: the Kimbacher Dorfmühle, the Künzels-, the Groh- and the Ölmühle, as well as the town mill in Bad König.

history

Little is known about the early history. What is certain is that the Neckar-Odenwald-Limes ran at the height between Kimbach and the neighboring village of Vielbrunn. Kimbach was first mentioned in a document in 1359 under the place name Kuntebuch . In the 16th century the village was called Kuntpach and in the 17th century Kymbach .

At first Kimbach was divided among many gentlemen. Successively or simultaneously, the von Erbach , the Starkerad, the Duborn, the Lords of Raibach, the Höchst Monastery and the Counts of Wertheim held shares in the village. It was not until 1551 that Kimbach was completely added to the Breuberg rule by the Reichenberg Treaty . With this it came to the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1806, which existed until 1919 initially as a sovereign state and later as a federal state of the German Empire.

At least since 1426 Kimbach was part of the Zent Lützelbach. Since 1551 the village belongs to the Ev. Vielbrunn parish.

Kimbach had his own mayor until 1812 and was then administered by the Vielbrunn mayor until 1849 . Kimbach was able to maintain this freedom until October 1, 1971, when it was incorporated into the municipality (from October 10, 1980 city) Bad König.

The Odenwald tree

The poet Auguste Pattberg drew the poem "There is a tree in the Odenwald" at the beginning of the 19th century. This work found its way into the folk song collection of Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim , who published it under the name “ Des Knaben Wunderhorn ”. The inspiration for this poem is said to have been a Kimbacher oak, which originally stood in a closed forest district. As early as 1922, when the forest was cleared, the tree was so famous that the Odenwaldklub campaigned to preserve it. The "Odenwald tree" was recognized as such and registered as a natural monument. In later years the oak was even presented by the Hessian Prime Minister Holger Börner on the occasion of the "Day of the Tree" in 1985 in what was then the federal capital Bonn, due to its fame and appearance .
