Klaus Kessler (politician)

Klaus Kessler (born June 14, 1951 in Dillingen / Saar ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) and was a member of the Saarland Landtag from November 2013 to April 2017 . Before that, he served as Saarland's Minister of Education from November 10, 2009 to January 18, 2012 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1970, he did his military service as a reserve officer candidate ; In 1990 his conscientious objection was recognized. He studied German and sports for teaching at grammar schools. After his legal clerkship he was a teacher at the comprehensive school in Saarbrücken Rastbachtal for twelve years. Klaus Kessler is director of studies for the subjects German and sport at comprehensive schools and grammar schools.

Klaus Kessler has been a member of the Saarland State Executive Committee of the Education and Science Union since 1987, and was its chairman from 1992 to 2009. He was a member of the Saarland state board of the German Federation of Trade Unions .

Kessler is the father of two sons.

From 2001 to 2003 he headed Saarlouis, the largest local Green Association in Saarland, as chairman. Since June 2003 he has been chairman of the Saarlouis district association. Since 2001 he has been a member of his party's regional executive committee.

Kessler was nominated by his party for the district election in June 2004 in the Saarlouis district as a district administrator.

From November 6, 2009, Kessler was Minister of Education in the Jamaica coalition in the Müller III cabinet and the Kramp-Karrenbauer I cabinet . He was dismissed from this office on January 18, 2012 when the Jamaica coalition failed. Stephan Toscani (CDU) took over the management of the Ministry of Education .

In the early election on March 25, 2012 , he ran for a seat in the state parliament, but missed the move. In the following years, Kessler worked as a senior ministerial advisor in the Saarland Ministry of Social Affairs, where he headed a staff unit and was in charge of developing an action plan to fight poverty. At the beginning of November 2013, Kessler finally moved up to the state parliament. He took over the mandate of the resigned Simone Peter , who was elected federal chairman of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. Kessler also took over Peter's functions as deputy chairman of the parliamentary group and parliamentary manager of the two-person parliamentary group. With the departure of the Greens in the state elections in Saarland in 2017 , he lost his mandate.
