Wulkow is a village in the unified municipality of Jerichow in the Jerichower Land district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The districts of Altbellin, Blockdamm, Großwulkow, Havemark, Hohenbellin and Kleinwulkow belong to the locality of Wulkow.

Großwulkow was first mentioned in 1144 as Wolkowe in the deed of foundation of the Jerichow monastery .

Kleinwulkow is a founding of Slavs displaced from Großwulkow. It was first mentioned in 1144 as "Slavica Wulkowe" in the founding deed of Jerichow Monastery.

On July 1, 1950, the two previously independent communities Großwulkow and Kleinwulkow formed the community Wulkow in the Genthin district. On April 1, 1974, the Hohenbellin community was incorporated into Wulkow. Already on September 30, 1928, the Hohenbellin manor district had been converted into a rural community.

On May 25th, 2009 the Wulkow municipal council decided to dissolve and to unite with 11 other municipalities to form a new unified municipality called the City of Jerichow . This contract was approved by the county as the lower local supervisory authority and came into effect on January 1, 2010.

At the same time, the Elbe-Stremme-Fiener administrative community ceased to exist, as all former member communities merged to form the new unified community “City of Jerichow” .

The coat of arms was designed by the Magdeburg local heraldist Jörg Mantzsch and the approval was given on November 21, 2008 by the district.

Blazon : "A howling silver wolf sitting in blue on a curved golden shield base and an uneducated golden full moon covered by its head."

The colors of Wulkow are: silver (white) - blue.

The flag is white-blue (1: 1) striped (horizontal shape: stripes running horizontally, lengthways shape: stripes running vertically) and is centered with the coat of arms.

Historical coats of arms

The former communities Großwulkow, Hohenbellin and Kleinwulkow already had a coat of arms-like seal image in their community seal. This was used in the period after the Second World War until around the introduction of the districts and counties in the GDR (1945–1952). Another source is the County Home Museum in Genthin.

Attractions

  • The Romanesque brick church in Großwulkow was built around 1170 and mentioned for the first time in 1172 in a document from Archbishop Wichmann of Magdeburg. The triumphal cross and baptism date from around 1160, the bell from around 1200 and the other furnishings from the 18th century. The church is now a station on the Romanesque Road .
  • Romanesque brick church in Kleinwulkow (built around 1200 as a branch church to Großwulkow, tower added in 1784). Since 1985 the church has been restored in several stages.
  • Bronze Age burial ground from around 1500 BC With 117 burial mounds (near Havemark).
  • Miniature castle in Kleinwulkow. Castle-like complex consisting of 2 granite stone towers, each 5 meters high, surrounded by a ~ 2 meter high wall. The building is privately owned but can be visited.

The German Foundation for Monument Protection was also involved in the restoration of the churches in Großwulkow and Kleinwulkow .

Culture

In addition to the Romanesque village churches in Groß- and Kleinwulkow, the Geschichtskreis & Marionettenbühne in the parish of Wulkow / Wust also takes care of those in the districts of Wust, Melkow and Sydow of the municipality of Wust as well as the early Gothic village church in Wust-Briest, which the Houses puppet stage . In 2006 the GuM received the silver medal of the Sachsen-Anhalt e. V. Romanesque Prize awarded.
