Children's game of the year 2001

Klondike is a parlor game of the Swiss game designer pair Stefanie Rohner and Christian Wolf , which in 1993 and 2000 HABA has been released. The first edition in 1993 was illustrated by Doris Matthäus , the modified second edition in 2000 was illustrated by Renate Selig . The game was awarded Children's Game of the Year in 2001.

The game is inspired by the process of panning for gold in a gold pan; the name is derived from the Klondike gold rush .

Rules and goals

The aim of every player is to collect as much "gold" as possible.

course

This can be achieved either by washing or betting. The balls in yellow ("gold nuggets") and black and gray ("stones") are put into a cloth bag and each player picks up three betting cards of one color. Now the first player blindly draws three balls from the bag. These are now placed in a bowl. If there is no yellow ball among these, it is the next player's turn. If it is a combination of gray, black and yellow balls, these must be separated by “panning for gold”.

Before the player "washes", all other players must assess how successful they will be with the help of their betting cards. Then the player tries to isolate the yellow balls. To do this, he puts the three balls in the bowl and tries to remove the gray and black balls from the plate by turning, swiveling or other movements. This continues until there are either no or only yellow balls left, which the player receives immediately. Then the other players reveal their tips and if the estimate is correct, they are rewarded with their stakes.

Playing

If a player runs out of gold or there are fewer than three balls in the bag, the game is over. The player with the most gold balls wins.

Klondike is a game of skill , as “washing out” the gold nuggets from the bowl requires a sure instinct.

Award

Klondike was nominated for children's game of the year together with Im Märchenwald and Rüsselbande and was able to prevail.
