The Kraiberg (also Kreiberg or Greinberg ) is a 365 m high mountain near the Upper Franconian town of Baunach . It is the southernmost elevation of the Kraiber ridge and thus the Zeilberge (Altensteiner Rhätolias ridge) between the rivers Baunach and Itz . The Kraiberg belongs to the southwestern Itz-Baunach hill country and is part of the Haßberge Nature Park . The mountain, which is several million years old, consists mainly of Keuper ( Franconian Keuper-Lias-Land ). Besides the Stiefenberg , the Kraiberg is also regarded as the second local mountain of the city of Baunach .

The Hubertus monument in honor of Saint Hubert is located on the Kraiberg in the south . The Greinbergblick vantage point there offers an excellent view of Baunach , Bamberg and the Main - Regnitz Valley as well as the Staffelberg , Franconian Switzerland and the southern foothills of the Haßberge .

history

The Kraiberg was already inhabited a few millennia ago - similar to the nearby Staffelberg . In addition to Celtic settlements , Hun graves were also discovered.

Flora and fauna

The Kraiberg is forested with mixed forest (mainly deciduous trees). On the lower slopes, wine used to be grown , followed by hops , and agriculture is still practiced today .

On the slopes of the Kraiberg, the approximately 95-hectare FFH protected area Hänge am Kraiberg was designated as part of one of the contiguous ( scattered fruit ) meadow-grassland complex . Numerous rare animal and plant species are indigenous there, including the two butterfly species listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive, light blue-fly ant blue ( Phengaris teleius , syn. Maculinea teleius ) and dark blue blue ( Phengaris nausithous , syn. Maculinea nausithous ).

tourism

The mountain ridge, which is well developed with hiking trails and bike paths, is a popular destination. The nature park administration has set up numerous information boards for hikers who are not familiar with the area.
