Barış Manço (born January 2, 1943 in Üsküdar , Istanbul ; † February 1, 1999 in Kadıköy , Istanbul) was a Turkish singer , composer , television presenter and actor . He was one of the most important people in Turkish music history. His trademarks have been his mustache and long hair since his youth, which he kept even in his mature age, when he was gray.

Life

He composed more than 200 songs, many of which have been translated into multiple languages ​​such as Greek , Bulgarian , Persian , Japanese , German , Italian , French or Arabic .

Barış ( Turkish for “peace”) Manço was born in Üsküdar, Istanbul. After graduating from Galatasaray High School , he later graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège , Belgium . He spoke fluent Turkish, French, English and Japanese and was also able to communicate in German, Arabic, Dutch , Spanish and Italian.

Barış Manço's musical career began while studying in Belgium. In the late 1960s he became famous as the pioneer of the so-called " Anadolu Rock " . Nevertheless, he often changed his style during his more than 41 years of artistic activity and adapted it to the respective time.

In 1970 Barış Manço made his breakthrough in Turkey with the single "Dağlar Dağlar". 700,000 records sold earned him a platinum award .

In 1976 he released a single in London (Barish Mancho - Nick The Chopper) . He achieved his international breakthrough in the European charts. For 4 weeks this record stayed at number 1 in England, France and Belgium. This placed him ahead of Elton John .

In the early 1990s he performed with Metallica at a rock concert in Russia .

In 1995 his records (Mega Manço, Müsaadenizle Çocuklar, Live in Japan) sold more in Tokyo than in his home country.

Manço died of a heart attack in 1999. Millions of fans mourned at the state funeral. His funeral is considered to be the one with the greatest number of mourners in Turkey.

Barış Manço lived in the Moda district of Istanbul's Kadıköy district. Today there is the Barış Manço Park in his honor in the district. One of the passenger ships that ply on the Bosporus was named after him.

Kurtalan Ekspres

Manço's most famous band, Kurtalan Ekspres, accompanied him on most of his stage appearances. The band members included many big names of their time: Murat Ses and Engin Yörükoğlu from the Moğollar , Mustafa Sarışın (Ağrı Dağı Efsanesi) , Nur Moray , Ohannes Kemer , Celal Güven gave the band its unmistakable character. Later members of the band were Elif Turhan , Ahmet Güvenç , Bahadır Akkuzu , Cihangir Akkuzu , Eser Taskiran and Serdar Ertürk.

TRT-1 , the first program of the Turkish state television beamed two successful shows by and with Barış Manço from: 378 episodes of the cultural and edutainment telecast 7 to 77 ye (From 7 to 77) were from October 1988 and the sixth December 1998. He entered the film world only once with his leading role in Baba Bizi Eversene (father, get married), shot in 1975 . There he played a slapstick role in a romantic comedy. His film music is also represented there.
