Economy and Infrastructure
landfill
The municipality of Frohnleiten rubbish dump is located on the Dürnberg in Laas. The landfill made a lot of money for the municipality in the 1970s to 1990s. The municipality gave the money for major projects such as the complete redesign of the market square (around ATS 60 million , € 4.36 million), the construction of an underground car park (around ATS 55 million, € 4 million) and the construction of the Theresienhof rehabilitation complex (around ATS 160 million, € 11.63 million) and the refurbishment of the landfill (around ATS 200 million, € 14.52 million); Furthermore, the expansion of the infrastructure (road construction, residential construction and district heating) consumed a total of around ATS 350 million (€ 25.44 million).
But new environmental regulations forced the municipality to put more and more money into the dump at Dürnberg. Furthermore, due to new environmental protection regulations, many waste products were no longer allowed to be stored in the landfill. Frohnleiten is currently struggling with a mountain of debt of around € 56 million, a large part of which is attributable to the landfill. In 2015, the Frohnleitner landfill applied for the highly toxic blue lime from Carinthia's Görtschitztal . This money would have put money back into the empty coffers of the community, but citizens' movements and the concern for clean drinking water quickly let this project fail.
