action
Mrs. Erlynne, the mother of Lady Windermere, works in the USA in a small and insignificant theater in New York. When she rejects her boss's advances and tries to introduce new pieces, she loses her job. Mrs. Erlynne, expelled from fine English society, returns to England from the USA with the intention of being accepted again in better English society. She had previously read an article in a newspaper about her daughter, who lives in wealthy circles in London. Soon they will be talked about again in London. But her daughter, Lady Margaret Windermere, who thinks her mother is dead, does not recognize her own mother. Lady Margaret Windermere's husband, Lord Windermere, receives information about his wife's mother but does not want to incriminate his wife with this information. Lady Margaret Windermere now thinks her husband has a relationship with Mrs. Erlynne. When it comes to an argument, Mrs. Erlynne withdraws from posh society so that the happiness and future of her daughter are not endangered.

meaning
The film is characterized by polished, subtle and profound dialogues. The reviews at the time were full of praise for the masterly and meticulous language. There is a lot of astute humor hidden in the film that is only recognized by listening closely. The language is played a lot and some things are ambiguous and leave room for social allusions to be interpreted. The cast is also excellent and testifies to Heinz Hilpert's great experience in the field of acting.
Reviews
"Cultivated film adaptation of the play by Oscar Wilde by a prominent theater director who - despite frequent scene changes and interspersed outdoor shots - remains true to the style of the stage."
