Life

Lars Motzfeldt was the son of the head catechist and regional councilor Hans Lars Hendrik Motzfeldt and his wife Dorthea Henriette Kathrine Hammeken. Klaus Lynge (1902–1981) was his brother-in-law. Lars Motzfeldt grew up in Qeqertarsuatsiaat and Paamiut . At the age of 16 he started attending Grønland's seminary . In 1930 he finished his training and started to work in Alluitsup Paa . Shortly afterwards he moved to Qaqortoq and ended up in Qassiarsuk in 1931 , where he worked as a catechist. On June 10, 1934, he married the shepherd's daughter Bolethe Konkordia Jakobæa Frederiksen, born in 1915, whose father founded Qassiarsuk in 1924. He received several dozen sheep as a dowry , gave up his activity as a catechist and became a sheep farmer himself. In 1958 he began working again as a catechist and teacher. In 1961 he was in charge of building a school for the children from Qassiarsuk and the surrounding shepherd's settlements when the skull of Erik the Red was found. Although it was already known that Erik had built his settlement Brattahlíð at this point , it was only after this discovery that archaeological excavations in Qassiarsuk began. In 1966 he accompanied Eigil Knuth on one of his expeditions to Pearyland . In 1967 he was trained as a teacher in Vallekilde and Løgumkloster . King Frederik IX handed him the Fortjenstmedaljen in 1968 . He finally retired in 1974. Lars Motzfeldt was the community governor in Qassiarsuk and sat on the local council for twelve years. In addition, he represented the late Isak Lund in 1950 and the late Carl Egede in Grønlands Landsråd in 1959 . Múte died in 1987 at the age of 78.
