History, infrastructure and sights
Place name and earlier modern times
The name was first mentioned in 1635 as Labiwießen in a mountain and forest directory of the Imperial Forestry Office Auhof (today a district on the western city limits of Vienna). In 1661 it appears as "Laabwiss". Until the middle of the 19th century there was no significant settlement apart from a few farms , an inn with a hotel and stage and a forester's house .
Tullnerbach station and development of the place
The construction of the kk privileged Empress Elisabeth Railway in 1858, today's Western Railway , here was Tullnerbach station built. As a result, some commercial businesses settled along the main street and summer villas were built. The Knabstraße at the station is still the actual center of Lawies Tullnerbach-here is the town hall , this, the former forester's house and the Villa Bader with Porter House are listed buildings . The original station building has not been preserved.
In 1870 parcels were made on the upper Lawies (above the railway), roads were laid out and 45 villas, a hotel and 2 commercial buildings were built between 1870 and 1900 . There, for example, the Villa Kastner, which is also listed, is located in Bahnhofsallee .
1881–1890, the Catholic Orphan Aid Association from Vienna built the Norbertinum as a boys and orphans asylum based on plans by architect Richard Jordan . Until 1938 it was under the direction of the school brothers. The agricultural college has been located there since 1947 .
The Bioerlebnis Norbertinum has been in operation there since 2000 , a show for the School on the Farm project , with around 6,000 visiting schoolchildren every year. Since 2009 it has been converted into a school center and the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve Center , and reopened in 2013.
The primary school Tullnerbach II at the lower end of the path to the Norbertinum (Norbertinumstraße 8) existed from 1884 to 1967.
Between 1895 and 1897, the municipal office opposite the train station was built under Mayor Josef Knab. The street in front of it therefore bears his name today.
In 1897 the previous station in Preßbaum was renamed Tullnerbach-Preßbaum .
The Tullnerbach Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded in 1900 and merged with the Untertullnerbach Voluntary Fire Brigade in 1999. In 2004 they moved into the new, shared multi-purpose house on the lake.
In 1922 the first public lighting was installed, for which Friedrich Schmidl, director of an orthopedic factory in Vienna VIII , campaigned.
