Lawrence Edward Payne (born October 2, 1923 in McLeansboro , Hamilton County , Illinois or Enfield , White County , Illinois, † August 11, 2011 in Ithaca , New York ) was an American mathematician .

Live and act

Lawrence E. Payne, called Larry Payne, was the son of Robert Ulysses Payne (1898–1990) and Harriet Gertrude Payne, b. Lasher (1898–1948) was born and had four siblings. He joined the US Navy in 1943 , which enabled him to study mechanical engineering at Iowa State University . In 1946 he graduated there with a Bachelor of Science . He then worked as an engineer for a year , but returned to Iowa State University to study applied mathematics . He completed this course in 1948 with a Master of Science and in 1950 with a Ph.D. from Dio Lewis Holl . After a year as an assistant professor at the University of Arizona , he joined the newly established Institute for Fluid Dynamics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Maryland in 1951 . From 1965 to 1994 he was Professor of Mathematics at Cornell University . There he was also director of the Center for Applied Mathematics and from 1977 to 1979 associate chairman of the mathematics department. Visiting scholar or visiting professor has taken him to the ETH Zurich , the Humboldt University of Berlin , the University of Genoa , the University of Florence , the University of Newcastle upon Tyne , the University of Glasgow , the University College Dublin , the University of Virginia , the University of Tennessee , the University of Delaware , the University of Wisconsin, and Heriot-Watt University .

Payne worked in the field of partial differential equations , especially those that appear in the description of solids and liquids. Among other things, he made contributions to the theory of elasticity , to the maximum principle and its applications in the theory of elasticity, to isoperimetric inequalities , to a priori estimates, to the mean value theorem of differential calculus , to Korn's inequality, to the principle of St. Venant and to correctly placed ones Problems .

In 1972 Payne received the Leroy P. Steele Prize of the American Mathematical Society , of which he had been a member since 1948, for his work Isoperimetric inequalities and their applications . He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics and, since 1991, the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In April 1990 he received the title of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) from the National University of Ireland and in 1992 the Citation of Merit from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University.

Payne had Irish roots and was also into genealogy . He married Ruth Winterstein (1927–1999) and had five children with her. He died of lymphatic cancer and was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Cayuga Heights, New York.

James H. Bramble is one of his PhD students .
