Leitendorf is a cadastral community and a district of Leoben , has an area of 5.0 km² and is located in the southwest of the city. The town is bounded by the Mur to the east, Göss to the south, Hinterberg to the west and the Waasen district to the north.

history

Leitendorf developed relatively late. In 1840 there were only 114 inhabitants in 24 houses, of which only 7 were in the village itself. From 1860 the number of inhabitants increased rapidly, because more and more industrial companies were established in the purely rural area ; In 1921 3088 inhabitants were recorded statistically.

At the end of the 19th century, the first ring furnace for refractory material was put into operation by Franz Endres. In 1921, the factory, popularly known as “Feuerfeste”, went to the Styrian Magnesit Industrie AG (Magindag). This company went bankrupt in 2000 and ceased operations. The buildings were demolished in 2019 and a new technology park is to be built there by 2021 . The warehouse at the corner of Einödmayergasse / Dorfstrasse, later used by the Porubsky iron factory, also belongs to this complex. Today the Porubsky Hall is used as an event location at times.

Because of the increased settlement of industry and the expansion of the railway lines, more and more living space was needed, so that as early as 1900 workers 'and railway workers' apartments were built. At Mareckkai, named after a former mayor of Leoben, a residential area was built relatively early. As a result schools were built: the first grammar school in Leoben and in 1954 the elementary school in Leitendorf. On January 29, 1977, the only indoor swimming pool in Leoben was opened in Leitendorf at that time; At the opening, the then Federal President Dr. Rudolf Kirchschläger gives a speech. With the opening of the Asia Spa Leoben in 2008, the indoor pool became unnecessary; after standing empty for years, it was demolished in the summer of 2015 to make room for a new student residence as well as accommodation for apprentices and trainees.

Originally conceived as a place for breeding cattle auctions, the Oberlandhalle , built in 1951 at the intersection of “Josef-Heissl-Straße / Pichlmayergasse” and “Ferdinand-Hanusch-Straße / Pichlmayergasse”, was also used for other kinds of events. The Oberlandhalle was demolished in 2016 and residential buildings are being built in its place.

economy

The district is now a residential, commercial and industrial area. The mining site of the lime works on the Galgenberg , which many refer to as the second ore mountain due to its appearance, is striking . Leisure needs are covered by a cinema center, the so-called star center, with a Cineplexx as well as numerous pubs , bars, cafes and restaurants and a large number of shops.
