Baron Leopold Wolfgang Balduin von Zandt (born April 6, 1784 in Düsseldorf , † May 6, 1851 in Munich ) was a royal Bavarian major general , chamberlain and adjutant general of King Ludwig I of Bavaria .

Leopold Wolfgang Balduin Freiherr von Zandt came from the older line of the original Rhineland noble family von Zandt. Members of this older Zandt line were confirmed as barons in the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1818. His father Johann Friedrich Freiherr von Zandt was a chamberlain from the Electorate of Cologne and a royal Bavarian general of the cavalry . His mother Anna Theresia Maria was born Freiin von Vietinghoff . Leopold Balduin's older brother Maximilian Freiherr von Zandt (1778–1867) also served in the Bavarian army and, like his father, became a general of the cavalry.

Military background

Leopold Balduin joined the 1st Cuirassier Regiment "Minucci" as a volunteer on November 29, 1798 and was assigned to the Electoral Military Academy in Munich a year later . Zandt was a volunteer until 1801 and on September 16, 1801 was appointed Junker in the Chevaulegers Regiment "Leiningen" . On October 21, 1803 he was promoted to lieutenant in the 2nd Chevaulegers Regiment "Elector" . As such, he fought in the campaign against Austria in 1805 and in the war against Prussia from 1806 to 1807 .

On May 14, 1807, Zandt was able to distinguish himself particularly in the occupation of the Silesian town of Kanth and the subsequent persecution of the enemy. In the army order of June 10, 1807, he was mentioned by name with praise. For his behavior on May 14th and 16th, as well as on June 28th 1807, he had applied for admission to the Military Max Joseph Order , which, however, was rejected. On February 20, 1808 promoted to first lieutenant in the 2nd Chevaulegers regiment "König", Zandt was also adjutant in the cavalry brigade and took part in the 1809 campaign against Austria . In the brevet of May 13, 1809 and by order of the army on June 1, 1809, Zandt was made a knight of the French Legion of Honor . In the Battle of Znojmo on July 10, 1809, he was seriously wounded in the thigh.

On September 4, 1810 he was promoted to Rittmeister in his regiment and fought with this unit in the Russian campaign in 1812 and in the war against France from 1813 to 1814. Zandt, major in the 7th Chevaulegers Regiment "Prince Karl" since December 31, 1813 , was able to distinguish himself again in the 1814 campaign. During the fighting at Dannemarie on February 17, 1814, he successfully covered the retreat of the V Army Corps and was able to prevent the capture of the Austrian Major General Leopold von Geramb (1775-1845) through his personal efforts . A chapter of the Military Max Joseph Order held in Mannheim headquarters on May 19, 1815 , chaired by Lieutenant General Delamotte, was in favor of Zandt's admission to the order. With an army order of June 24, 1815, Major Zandt was named a Knight of the Military Max Joseph Order for his service during the fighting at Dannemarie on February 17, 1814.

With the formation of the 1st Cuirassier Regiment "Prince Karl" on March 23, 1815, Zandt, who had also received the Russian Order of St. Anne 2nd Class by army order of March 31, 1814 , joined this regiment, with which he 1815 saw the campaign against France. On April 4, 1820, Zandt was transferred to the Garde du Corps regiment and promoted to lieutenant colonel on April 11, 1820 . On August 21, 1827 he received the Knight's Cross of the Austrian Leopold Order .

On December 1, 1830 Colonel in the 4th Chevaulegers Regiment "King" promoted Zandt was in April 1831 in the same position for the first Cuirassiers "Prince Charles" was added and the Cross of Honor on November 15, 1839 Ludwig Order awarded . In addition to the awards already mentioned, Zandt received the Knight's Cross of the Saxon Military Order of St. Henry on June 25, 1837 , the Russian Order of St. Anne II Class with diamonds on September 28, 1838 and the Commander's Cross of the Austrian Leopold Order . He died on May 6, 1851 at the age of 67 in Munich.

Marriage and offspring

Leopold Balduin von Zandt married Freiin Antonie von Conninx († August 14, 1854). They left three children, a son and two daughters. The son Karl Freiherr von Zandt became a royal Bavarian chamberlain and official at the Augsburg Railway Authority . Of his sisters, Marie, the elder, married the royal Bavarian major general Christian von Schmaltz and the younger, Emilie, married the royal Bavarian major Fischer.
