Alexei Vladimirovich Lesin
Alexei Vladimirovich Lesin ( Russian Алексей Владимирович Лезин ; born February 27, 1973 in Energetik, Orenburg Oblast ) is a Russian boxer .
Career
National
Lesin started boxing in 1984 and became a five-time Russian champion during his career. At the Russian Championships in 2001 he lost to Alexander Powetkin in the final , but was able to beat him in 2003.
European championships
He was also multiple European champion:
- In 1996 he won the super heavyweight title in Vejle after a semi-final victory over René Monse and a final victory over Wladimir Klitschko .
- In 1998 he won the European Championship in Minsk , where he beat Sjarhej Lyachowitsch in the quarterfinals and Sinan Şamil Sam in the semifinals .
- He also won the European Championship 2000 in Tampere and defeated Cengiz Koç and the Italian Paolo Vidoz in the final .
World championships
At his first World Championships in Tampere in 1993 , he failed as a heavyweight (up to 91 kg) in the quarter-finals to Félix Savón , Cuba (13: 7). But then he won the 1995 World Championships in Berlin in the super heavyweight class. His final opponent there was Vitali Klitschko .
At the 1997 World Cup in Budapest, he lost in the quarterfinals prematurely against Cuban Alexis Rubalcaba .
Olympic games
He went into the tournament as one of the favorites at both of the Olympic Games in which he participated, but failed to meet expectations. In 1996 he took part in the Olympic Games in Atlanta for Russia . There he defeated René Monse again in the quarterfinals, but lost to the eventual winner Wladimir Klitschko on points in the semifinals and thus secured a bronze medal.
The 2000 Olympic Games ended for Lesin in the first fight when he lost prematurely to the later gold medalist Audley Harrison . He had been ahead on points until shortly before the end.
More Achievements
In 1994 he won the Goodwill Games held in Saint Petersburg . He prevailed against Nikolai Valujew and Lance Whitaker , among others .
Lesin took part in the military world championships four times, winning the gold medal in 1994 and 1999, losing in the final to Vitali Klitschko in 1995 and being eliminated in the semifinals in 2002 against Roberto Cammarelle , Italy .
