history

Presumably Celtiberian Turduls founded the place in the 6th century BC. In the Visigoths it was called Lenio or Leniobriga and was a bishopric. After being in Arab possession for a long time , King Alfonso III conquered . in the year 900 Linhares, which was then recaptured by the Arabs. It was only Portugal's first king, D.Afonso Henriques , who finally took the place and gave it his first town charter ( Foral ) in 1169 . Already known as Linhares , from the Linho (English: linen ) grown and processed in large numbers here , the area was attacked several times by the Kingdom of León , but without ever being able to be permanently conquered. In view of the continuing risk of invasion, King D Dinis expanded the fortress considerably until 1291. The reason was the strategically important location of the place against threatening invasions in the valley of the Mondego , through which also trade routes ran between Castile and Porto and Lisbon , but also routes of the pilgrims of St. James along the old Roman roads.

In 1510 King Manuel I renewed the town charter . In 1576, the Santa Casa de Misericórdia hospital was set up in the former pilgrims' hostel , and the place also flourished in cultural terms. So worked here u. a. Grão Vasco and the Flemish painter Frei Carlos . After the Restoration War and the country's independence in 1640, the importance of the place decreased. Linhares, as one of the few places in the region, retained the tradition of communal gatherings inherited from the Lusitanians as part of local self-government and commons .

To 1855 was Linhares headquarters of an independent circle to include since the county of Celorico da Beiro and its status as Vila losing (small town). The place continued to lose importance and was increasingly forgotten until it became known among friends of paragliding in the 1980s . In 1994, thanks to its historical importance and its diverse and well-preserved buildings, the place received a qualification as Aldeia Histórica (German: historical village), and in 1998 it was included in the newly created program of the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal . Since then, tourism has gained in importance, not focusing on mass tourism , but on nature tourism (hiking, paragliding, etc.) and rural tourism . So which maintains Inatel here a house with 26 rooms.

In 2011, Jancis Robinson , the well-known British wine critic , visited the place and described it as mystical .
