The looping slide is a form of water slide in which the slide negotiates an uphill stretch.

history

The first loop water slide was built in Action Park in New Jersey . This slide, called the “Cannonball Loop”, had a vertical loop and was opened in the 1985 season. Because it turned out to be too dangerous, it was closed again a month later. However, the slide was never dismantled and is still there today.

After there had been no water slides with looping for over 20 years, the Swiss manufacturer Klarer Freizeitanlagen AG presented a concept of a 15 meter high water slide with vertical looping at the Interbad 2006 trade fair in Stuttgart. However, this was after several TÜV exams and test runs, among other things because of the excessive g-forces (over 2.6  g discarded), an inclined loop (instead was Inclined Loop ) developed that meets the strict requirements of DIN EN 1069th At the same time, the Austrian manufacturer Aquarena Freizeitanlagen GmbH was also working on a concept for a loop slide with an inclined loop. In 2008, the first looping slide was finally opened in the Therme 3000 swimming pool in Slovenia ; it comes from Aquarena , where it is sold under the name AquaLoop . Only a few months later, Klarer's first looping slide opened in the German swimming pool AquaMagis Plettenberg . As a result, a patent dispute developed between Aquarena and Klarer , which Aquarena won - Aquarena had patented inclined loop sections. Klarer, however, had bet on vertical loops. Since then z. B. slanted loop slides clear with "Licensed by Aquarena" be characterized.

In 2009, Aquarena's first looping slide opened at the Aqualand leisure pool in Cologne with the local Aqualoop, and at the same time the first looping slide that runs completely inside a building ( indoor ). The Wet'n'Wild Gold Coast water park in Australia has four looping slides. In 2010 the first water slide with two loops opened, the L2 in the Austrian swimming pool Wave in Wörgl , which comes from Aquarena. There are now two more of these "double loop slides", both of which are in Germany, namely in the Miramar in Weinheim and in the Kristall Palm Beach in Stein .

The loop slides use like some other fast slides e.g. B. a so-called "rocket launch". The slide stands in a starting capsule, the bottom of which is designed as a trap door . After a countdown or other sound effects, the trap door opens and the slide falls into an almost vertical tube. At the end of the fall, speeds of up to 60 km / h can be achieved. As a rule, the “rocket launch” is operated manually by a lifeguard who also monitors the slide with the help of cameras and sensors .

While normal water slides only have a water supply at the entrance , the inside of the looping of the looping slide is permanently wetted with water by means of spray mist; after the looping there is an additional water supply. A water drainage at the lowest point in front of the loop prevents water from collecting before the loop and slows down the slide so that it does not make the loop. In front of each loop there is also an emergency exit hatch through which a slider who has not made the loop can be freed again.

In the German patent text of Aquarena, the main claim is a loop length of at least 270 ° and an inclination from the vertical of 5 ° to 80 °, which seems largely due to patent law, because the necessity of the inclination is justified by the fact that the acceleration is within the permissible range remains, which seems hardly achievable with a 5 ° inclination to the vertical. On the other hand, a loop with a 10 ° incline to the horizontal cannot really be viewed as a looping. The further training courses mentioned in the patent text give an idea of ​​extensive preliminary tests. It is mentioned that the circular acceleration should not fall below a minimum value of 1  g in order not to lift off from the water film. This is also an indication that with water slide loops the speed at the apex must be quite high, which is not the case with roller coasters, which in turn shows the dilemma with the high g- loads at the starting point of the curve. For this purpose, a decreasing radius of curvature of the loop section is proposed in order to maintain constant acceleration with decreasing speed or to reduce the highest g -load when entering the loop. Explanations are made on the safety of the system with regard to the need to check the clearance before another person starts and to rescue a person who does not reach the exit.
