Christian Ludwig Mayer

Christian Ludwig Mayer (born March 21, 1974 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) is a German pianist and composer . Since 2008 he has occasionally appeared under the name Ludwig Auwald .

Life

In his youth, Mayer taught himself to play the piano largely self-taught . During his music studies at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich , in addition to jazz piano with Leonid Chizhik , he also studied classical piano with Robert Regös, harpsichord with Michael Eberth and jazz composition with Thomas Zoller . In addition, he expanded his instruments in self-teaching. At the same time he took part in concerts in juvenile detention centers as part of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation. In 2002 he was the winner of the Gasteig Promotion Prize. For further training in the field of contemporary music, he took composition lessons with Laurence Traiger , Wilfried Hiller and Anton Prestele. Since then he has been working as a freelance composer and pianist at home and abroad.

The jazz journalist and critic Marcus Woelfle describes him in the music magazine Rondo as follows:

"Mayer, the composer of all pieces, has the lively fantasy of Jaki Byard , which mediates between the genres , the singing touch of Roland Hanna , the romantic soul of Robert Schumann and a huge portion of individuality."

Mayer regularly gives concerts internationally in various musical genres, for example in Italy, France, Scotland, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland and the USA. He worked with artists such as Günther Klatt , Yorgui Loeffler , Susanne Brantl , Bibi Johns , Meret Becker , Dirk Bach , Walter Plathe and Noël Akchoté . He composed a. a. for Ottfried Fischer und die Heimatlosen (with trumpeter Claus Reichstaller ), the Art Ensemble of Passau (with Peter Tuscher ), the Ensemble Berlin as well as for own formations like the Auwald Trio, his Ensemble International, or the Auwald Consort.

From 2010 to 2012 he worked under the pseudonym "Ludwig Auwald" with director Dieter Wedel , as composer and musical director of the Nibelungen Festival Worms 2010 to 2012 and the Zwinger Festival Dresden 2011.

In 2017 Mayer and his Auwald Trio (with Munich bassist Lui Leininger and Swiss drummer Lorenz Rutigliano) released the debut CD Token Gestures , which received a nomination for the German Record Critics' Prize in February 2017. Another focus of his work is preoccupation with early music and free improvisation. As a composer, in addition to theater music and jazz, he primarily writes chamber music.
