Ludwig von Stempel

Ludwig Stempel , knight of Stempel since 1908 (born November 4, 1850 in Grünstadt , † July 30, 1917 in Kaiserslautern ), was a German architect of historicism and a Bavarian building officer . He designed numerous administrative buildings, but also individual private houses on the territory of the Kingdom of Bavaria , especially in the Bavarian Palatinate . At the end of his professional career he was head of the Supreme Building Authority in the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior .

Ludwig Stempel, son of a teacher of the same name, attended the Progymnasium Grünstadt and studied architecture at the Polytechnic School in Munich during Gottfried von Neureuther's time .

In 1877 he came as assessor at the Royal. Landbauamt Kaiserslautern. In 1886 he was appointed building officer and head of the authority. His most important buildings in the Palatinate include the Apostle Church in Kaiserslautern and the main post offices in Kaiserslautern and Pirmasens , which are stylistically assigned to the Neo-Renaissance and are reminiscent of Italian palazzi.

From autumn 1897 to February 1898 he was a temporary district building officer at the Kgl. Government for Upper Franconia in Bayreuth . He then moved to the Kgl as senior building officer and consultant for cultural buildings. Supreme building authority to Munich .

In 1909 he was appointed Ministerialrat. From 1915 until his retirement in 1917, he finally served as the head of the Supreme Building Authority in the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, succeeding Richard Reverdy . During his work in Munich, he was responsible for the construction of several extensions to the Munich University Hospital , including the polyclinic and the eye clinic.

Only a few months after his retirement, Ludwig von Stempel died of pneumonia at the age of 66 in his former main place of work in Kaiserslautern.

Honors

Several medals were awarded during his lifetime. In 1905 he received the Order of Merit of St. Michael III from the Bavarian Crown . Class. In 1907 he received the Commander's Cross of the Imperial Austrian Franz Joseph Order . In 1908 the Prussian Red Eagle Order III was awarded. Class. In the same year he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown , with which the personal nobility was associated.

In the 100th year of his death, the building committee of the city of Kaiserslautern decided on January 16, 2017 to name the area between Trippstadter Straße, Parkstraße and Sturmstraße on the edge of the Kaiserslauter city park as Ludwig-Ritter-von-Stempel-Platz in honor of the architect .
