Lists on the subject

The RIM-8 Talos was a sea-launched long -range surface-to-air missile of the United States Navy and one of the first anti-aircraft missiles with which American ships were equipped. The rocket was 11.58 m long, weighed 3,538 kg and had a range of up to 160 km. The Talos was in service from 1963 until the late 1970s.

description

The first tests with the new missile developed from the Bumblebee project began in 1959, still under the designation SAM-N-6 . The semi-active radar-guided weapon was introduced to the US Navy in 1963; there were several variants with conventional or nuclear warheads and ground-to-ground versions for use against radar stations.

Due to its size, the weapon could only be used by a few ships. The launch was from a Mk. 12 double-arm launcher, the magazine held 46 missiles.

During the Vietnam War , three MiGs were shot down by the Talos of the Long Beach and the Chicago . The Long Beach except the Mk-12 starters early 1980s against Armored Box Launcher has been replaced, the vessels which were Talos began, retired at the latest 1980th

The launch stage of the disarmed Talos rockets is used as a launch stage in various sounding rockets such as the Talos Aries and the Black Brant XI and XII due to their high thrust . Other Talos missiles have been modified for targeting and are used under the designation MQM-8 Vandal . Outwardly, these do not differ from the original Talos guided missiles. MQM-8 target missiles are launched from Point Mugu to simulate supersonic cruise missiles to test defense systems.
