Pirate attack off the Somali coast, September 6, 2010

Somali pirates hijacked the ship on the morning of September 8, 2010 ( 13 °  S , 50 °  E ). The Magellan Star was on its way to Singapore from Bilbao with a load of anchor chains .

The crew of the ship under the Polish captain consisted of six Filipinos , two Russians , two Ukrainians , and one Bulgarian . The Magellan Star was the third ship in a convoy accompanied by US warships at a distance of two nautical miles . The first ship in the convoy, the freighter Olig B sailing under the Maltese flag , was also attacked.

The Turkish frigate Gökçeada (F-494) of the Oliver Hazard Perry class of the multinational Combined Task Force 151 to combat piracy in the Horn of Africa received an emergency call from the freighter, whereupon the warship USS Dubuque (LPD-8) ( US -Marine ) deployed a 24-man Maritime Raid Force (MRF) from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) (1st Battalion 4th Marines) from the United States Marine Corps under the command of Lt. Col. Joseph R. Clearfield. The captain had switched off the engines in good time and locked himself with the crew in a safety room. From there he could make the emergency call with a satellite phone. The pirates could not find the crew. During the hijacking, the Somali pirates contacted the shipping company in Germany via a telephone number posted on the bridge for emergencies to ask where the crew was and how they could get the engines going. However, they received no answer.

After 20 hours in the hands of the pirates, the ship and crew were freed by the Dubuque boarding team on the morning of September 9, 2010 at 3:30 a.m. local time . Eight helicopters were used in the action. The Marines overwhelmed the nine kidnappers without an exchange of fire. Nobody got hurt. At 6.30 a.m. the soldiers disembarked with the detained pirates. The pirates were brought aboard the accompanying warship USS Princeton (CG-59) .

During the capture, the pirates destroyed the interior, control system and other parts of the ship. As a result, the ship was no longer fully seaworthy after the attack. Accompanied by a US warship, the Magellan Star drove to Dubai for a general overhaul . The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) took over the investigation into this case.
