Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works ( Russian Магнитогорский металлургический комбинат / Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, abbr. MMK , popularly Magnitka (Магнитка)) is a Russian company with headquarters in Magnitogorsk . The company produces various types of steel . The company produces around 20 percent of the steel produced in Russia. MMK is headed by Viktor Raschnikow . The company is listed in the RTS Index on the Russian Stock Exchange.

Based on the well-known since the 18th century iron ore reserves of the magnetic mountain (Russian: gora Magnitnaja ) - 1928 250, estimated later to 400 million tonnes - which began Soviet Union in the newly founded city of Magnitogorsk in 1929 in its first five-year plan the construction of a Steel mill. The first steel tapping took place on February 1, 1932 on the site of the 1st quarter . During the German-Soviet war , production was significantly improved and enlarged by GI Nossow , who managed the plant from 1940 until his death in 1951.
