María Pía Fernández Moreira (born April 1, 1995 in Trinidad ) is a Uruguayan athlete who competes in the middle distance run .

Athletic career

The 1.70 meter tall María Pía Fernández visits the Escuela Universitaria de Tecnología Médica, Medicina in Montevideo . According to her own statements, she started athletics at the age of 13 on the initiative of her sports teacher at the high school (Liceo). Since then (as of March 2, 2015) Sebastián Allende has been her trainer. Just four months after starting regular training, she won the Uruguayan secondary school championships and qualified for the Juegos Sudamericanos Escolares 2008 (South American Student Games ) held in Uruguay that year . A year later she also took part in the Juegos Sudamericanos Escolares 2009 in Ecuador . As part of the Argentine Championships 2012, she just qualified for the U-18 South American Championship in Mendoza . In the continental competition that took place a few months later, she won the silver medal in the 800-meter run in 2: 13.64 minutes .

At the 28th South American Cross Country Championships on February 24, 2013, she finished 11th on the 6 km course of the juniors with a time of 26: 30.0 minutes and placed third with the Uruguayan team. She finished the Uruguayan Championships in September 2013 as the title holder over the 800 meter distance with a run time of 2: 14.07 minutes. At the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellín she was over 800 and 1500 meters in fifth. In October 2013, she took silver in the 800-meter course in 2: 14.61 minutes at the Junior South American Championships in Chaco.

In 2014 she posted a season best of 2: 10.37 minutes on this route. She was part of the Uruguayan squad at the South American Games in Santiago de Chile . There she reached the final and just missed the bronze medal in fourth with a time of 2: 08.62 minutes. So she qualified for the Junior World Championships in Eugene , where she was eliminated with 2: 10.97 minutes in the lead. Then she won the bronze medal over 800 meters at the U23 South American Championships in Montevideo in 2: 09.89 minutes, as well as with the Uruguayan 4 x 400 meter relay. In addition, she was fifth in the 1,500 meter run in 4: 35.85 minutes. In February 2015 she improved her Uruguayan record over the 1,500 meter distance, which she set in September 2014 with a time of 4: 26.61 minutes, to 4: 24.00 minutes in the first competition of the year. At the same time she qualified for the Pan American Games in Toronto , where she finished eleventh in 4: 27.17 minutes. At the South American Championships in Lima , she won the bronze medal over 1500 meters behind the Colombian Muriel Coneo and in 4: 19.37 minutes Flávia de Lima from Brazil.

In 2016 she also secured the bronze medal at the Ibero-American Championships in Rio de Janeiro in 4: 12.61 min and then won the U23 South American Championships in Lima in 2: 08.83 min and 4: 24.51 min 800 and 1500 meters. The following year she was fourth in the South American Championships in Luque in 4: 23.50 min. In 2018 she won the silver medal over 1500 meters behind Coneo at the South American Games in Cochabamba in 4: 30.56 minutes and won the bronze medal over 800 meters in 2: 17.16 minutes behind her compatriot Déborah Rodríguez and the Colombian Rosangélica Escobar . Then she won the 3000 meter run in 9: 16.16 minutes at the Ibero-American Championships in Trujillo and won the silver medal over 1500 meters in 4: 18.65 minutes. In 2019 she won the South American Championships in Lima in 4: 27.44 min over 1500 meters and was then fourth at the Summer Universiade in Naples in 4: 12.62 min. Before that she finished 100th at the Cross Country World Championships in Aarhus after 44:21 minutes. In August she took part in the 1500 meter run at the Pan-American Games in Lima and finished fifth in 4: 10.93 minutes. She qualified for the World Championships in Doha , where she finished with 4: 09.45 minutes in advance . Then she was fourth at the Military World Games in Wuhan with 4: 27.78 min.

In 2020, she won the first-ever indoor South American championships in Cochabamba with a new national record of 4: 31.03 min over 1500 meters and could not finish her run over 3000 meters.

In 2011 and 2012 as well as 2014 Fernández was Uruguayan champion in the 800 meter run as well as in 2014 and 2015 as well as 2019 over 1500 meters.
