Quebrada Honda Valley

The Marcará district is located in the Carhuaz province of the Ancash region in central western Peru . The district was founded on October 6, 1905. It has an area of ​​157.49 km². At the 2017 census there were 9,478 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 7,704, in 2007 it was 8,634. The administrative center is the homonymous town of Marcará, 2726  m high, with 1,416 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Marcará district is located in the southeast of the Carhuaz province. The western part of the district is located in the high valley Callejón de Huaylas on the right bank of the north-flowing Río Santa . There the main town Marcará is 6.5 km southeast of the provincial capital Carhuaz . The Marcará district extends east over the northern part of the Quebrada Honda river valley, which drains the glacial lake Laguna Minoyo. The valley is framed by the mountains of the Cordillera Blanca . These include Nevado Vicos ( 5315  m ), Nevado de Copa ( 6188  m ) and Nevado Paccharaju ( 5744  m ). The eastern part of the district lies within the Huascarán National Park . The district is bordered to the northwest by the Carhuaz and Acopampa districts , to the northeast by the Chacas district ( Asunción province ), to the extreme east by the Huari district ( Huari province ) and to the south by the San Miguel de Aco , Pariahuanca and Anta districts .
