Mário José Gomes de Freitas Centeno (born December 9, 1966 in Vila Real de Santo António ) is a Portuguese economist . He has been an Independent Member of the Partido Socialista (PS) parliamentary group in the Portuguese Parliament since October 2015 . From November 2015 he was Finance Minister in the Costa I and Costa II Cabinets, and since January 2018 Chairman of the Eurogroup . On June 9, 2020, he resigned from both offices.

education

The second son of a postal worker and a banker, Centeno grew up in the Algarve . At the age of 15 he moved to Lisbon with his three brothers to continue his education there. He studied economics at the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) and also completed a master's degree in applied mathematics at the ISEG in Lisbon.

From 1995 to 2000 he studied economics at Harvard University , which he completed with a doctorate . During this time he played rugby on a student team .

Career

In 2000, Centeno returned to Portugal with his wife and three children, where he joined the Economics and Research Department at the Bank of Portugal . Four years later, he was appointed assistant director of the department, a position he held until the end of 2013. He has been a special advisor to the Bank of Portugal since the beginning of 2014, after having previously unsuccessfully applied for the post of director. He is also visiting professor at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Lisbon .

Since October 23, 2015, Centeno has been an independent member of the parliamentary group of the Partido Socialista (PS) in the Portuguese parliament . From November 26, 2015, he was Minister of Finance in the Costa I cabinet . On December 4, 2017, Centeno was elected to succeed Jeroen Dijsselbloem as chairman of the Eurogroup . He took office on January 13, 2018.

On June 9, 2020, he announced his resignation as finance minister and euro group leader.

Private

Centeno is married to a fellow student and has three children. He is a Benfica fan.
